    Hi

Enterprise Ireland have an employment grant called the CORD grant. You do need to be on a Enterprise Platform Programme such as the DIT Hothouse (I am associated with the Hothouse) to avail of it. Some more info in this thread.

The enterprise boards also have various employment and feasibility study grants. Some details here http://www.dceb.ie/financial-assistance/types-of-grants

There is also the SEED capital grant. The Seed Capital Tax Relief Scheme is tax efficient ways of claiming back up to 4 of the last six years of the PAYE & PRSI that you paid as an employee, when you are investing in your own new limited company.

They are the main ones I know of anyway.

    Best of luck

I was wondering about the same before... I was pointed in the direction of supplementary welfare allowance, but when I went about applying for it, I was met with fairly fierce resistance. Despite the fact that Citizens Information claims that self employed people may qualify if income is below a certain level.

Apparently if people could get benefit for setting up businesses, "everyone would just start their own business and claim". Yeah, just like everyone leaves their jobs to claim the dole

(Sorry for the rant..just a bit frustrated with the level of support I've seen to date. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.)

I work in this area, supporting the establishment and development of small businesses. If you want to pm me with a bit more detail about the type of business and your location, I'll try and tell you what might be available and point you in the direction of where you need to go. In confidence of course.

It seems to me that unless you are starting very specific types of business eg manufacture, IT, export then there are few and far between schemes available.

Does anyone know if there ary schemes available either grant, subsidy or tax relief, for setting up a small business consultancy in Dublin?

almost all grants are for manufacturing / export businesses as smirky pointed out. And even then, the grant money is to be used in building the company not paying yourself a wage.

Went looking for grants years ago through such places are enterprise boards and the like but found them more of a hindrance than a help - fair enough, my line of business was one they had absolutely no interest of getting involved with.

You must also look at the implications of getting into bed with grant agencies as they set a look of stringent rules you must adhere to. If its a multinational company with possibility of employing large numbers of staff, go down the enterprise board route. Other wise, hit the banks for cash or try some start up business competitions:

    http://www.impactmedia.ie/Elevate-Award.shtml

Of course, once your business is started, see if you can hit the enterprise people for employment grants - this will cover up to 7500 of an employees annual wage.

Unfortunately, the best way to cover "that period between leaving my job and getting money from my first job working for myself" is what savings and personal loans are for.
If you want to start your own business, (without either rich parents or massive investment capital), time to start planning to live on the bread line, put the head down and work your arse to the bone!

Best of luck though, once you get things going, it can be very very worth while. You will never work for anyone EVER again!
