I did a road trip years ago from Van to LA- all my family lived in Van- we did the I5 the whole way down though.

And it's your lucky day- I used to live in Oregon right on the coast so know the northern part of the coast very well.

If you do the 101 Pacific Coast Highway, the first town you'll hit in Oregon is Astoria, you cross over the bridge from Washington State, it's a nice town, goonies and kindergarden cop were filmed here. head south on the 101 towards Seaside (you'll drive through the outskirts of a small town called Gearhart ( I lived here!!!). I recommend driving into it (there's only like 5 main streets), turn right at the traffic lights on the 101 (dairy queen is on the left), drive down the street til you come to the crossroads junction, drive straight through, turn right at the tennis courts until you come to Gearhart Golf Links (I worked here), park your car here and you can walk down to the beach across the road.

and go onto the beach- the view of Tilamook Head to your left is really nice- the beach here stretches for miles and miles.
Seaside is the next big town down (stop in the outlets on the left as you come into the town, good Nike store here). Before you head on route 26 towards Portland, I rhighly ecommend going to Cannon Beach (they have the giant haystacks in the sea), it's about 15 minute drive south of Seaside- just follow the signs. There's another beach south of this called Short Sands, not as well know, can't remember if it's signposted, i know there's a parking lot and you have to walk through a short forest trail to get there.

Portland is about a 90 minute drive from Seaside! Check out Kells Irish bar in the Pearl District, saturday night is brilliant here, not far from Downtown, a family friend owns it and McCormick and Schmicks is good for food!
If you want any other info, just PM me, really jealous, I'm well over due a trip back to see my friends there.
    Everyone is mega friendly!

If you're yet to go there, try White Rock. On a sunny day, it's hard to beat for a nice place, it's just off the King George Highway.

Over the border, I really enjoyed my couple of days in Seattle - see the space needle, fish market, original starbucks etc.

Venture towards Mt. St. Helens aswell, maybe...

Did this last year, and on to LA and Vegas.
I'd agree with sticking to Highway 1/101.
Get the ferry from Seattle across to the Olympic peninsula and skirt around the coast - lovely scenery and deserted beaches.
A nice detour is from Aberdeen over to Olympia (great town), then on to Portland via Mt St Helens.
