    Filesystem is corrupted.

    Boot into the commandline using the windows cd and run chkdsk /r to make sure the disk is not corrupted.

    Try the above first. If that doesn't fix it, which it should if it's got a 'corrupted file system' try doing a repair of xp. It will leave everything intact, so there won't be any data lost. Was there a power cut or did the laptop run out of power while she was using it?

    that wouldnt have made too much difference, unless the system was in the middle of an important read/write - the chance of that is very slim.

    Either way she needs an XP CD to proceed.
