raised beds on grass

Could you put raised beds frames straight down on grass and fill them with top soil? Rather than remove the grass first either by digging out or killing it.
Would the depth of approx 12" of soil kill off the grass from lack of light?

Take out and big weeds and turn the sod first and it should be fine.

Ideally remove the top layer, but a quick and easier alternative might be to line the base with newspaper to help kill the grass etc and which will also mulch in time.
