    Hi everyone,

My brother and girlfriend are heading off in the next couple of months and covering south america, south africa and australia. I wanted to get a going away gift for them, something they can bring along. They are going for 6 months. I did read a thread here about travelling accessories, and ideas someone wanted to give their brother also, but they were more along the lines of travel towels and handy items. I was hoping to give something a bit more personal, anyone ever give a journal? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

    Thanks

How about a bit of emergency cash in a number of different currencies? Handy and thoughtful!

If there going for 6mts i'd say if you sent them some cash around christmas it would be much appreciated....not much you can take travelling really, shorts, sunglasses, camera, unlocked mobile phone, travel diary with room for pictures, waterproof rucksack....

You could keep the money yourself and go hook with them for a week or 2 of there travels....

hmmm i guy im traveling with looked up a list of **** to bring with him which included really silly **** like universal plug, USB fone, washing line etc. he threw all of it away the other day so forgoet those lists you see online..

Things i personally would really appreciate would be a (good) knife or penknife, i got a headlamp last week its really handy for reading (no lights on buses and hostels can have lights out at 11pm) or finding your way in hostels with little or no electricity. i got one of those space towels (soaks up 900% ??) used it once and threw it away, it was **** dont get that.... a rain mack? my sister got me a real tidy one before i left its about the size of a small breakfast roll... handy... a diary is cool. mine got robbed though... a good book.. set up a skype account and put money on it... South america on a shoestring (lonely planet) if they have an ipod take it and put a video msg on it of you and family and dont tell them theyll probably find it a few months after or just tell them when they feeling lonely...
    thats all i got!
