Spain's Iban Mayo was given a two-year ban after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) upheld an appeal by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

The UCI took its case to Cas after the Spanish Cycling Federation refused to punish the rider.

The ban was back dated to 31st of july last year so he only has just slightly less than a year of a ban remaining

What was the reason for the Spanish federation refusing to punish him?

What was the reason for the Spanish federation refusing to punish him?

His A sample tested positive for EPO. Then the B sample came back inconclusive. They got it retested and it came back positive. There was an argument that it should only have been tested once.

Mayo was one of my favourite riders. Watching him, Armstrong, Ullrich, Vino and Beloki in the 2003 was great.
