Anyone else have difficulty streaming videos from the rte website?

I'm using ubuntu. I've tried opening some of the Olympic videos using kaffeine but for some reason it keeps opening the wrong videos. The links work fine in XP.

    any ideas?

iirc I tried it once - didn't work due to using Real Media. Never tried again. I'm sure there's a way but I wasn't bothered.

It works fine for me using MPLAYER, and in kaffine. I'm using KDE4 on suse.

If you're using ubuntu 8.04, run the following command:

    sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer w32codecs

If this gives you an error, you could do with adding some extra software repositories.

A lot of Media packages are available from the MediBuntu repository.
Follow the instructions on that page to enable the repository,
or paste this line into the file /etc/apt/sources.list
    deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free non-free

Your video may have spots on it if you're running a 3D window manager.
If it does, right click on the video and select configure.
If you choose 'gl' as the video output, it may still be slightly spotty when embedded,
but you can switch to fullscreen and it should then be clear.

Let us know how you get on.
It would be good to have it confirmed that that was the package that made it work!

I tried the steps recommended by Nial above but no joy. For some reason Kaffeine was still opening some seemingly random other Olympic video on the rte website.

However, I have found a way of playing the videos in the end. I downloaded Realplayer for Linux and can now play the clips no problem. The videos aren't embedded like in Windows but better than nothing I guess.

If you've installed the plugin, you should now have the option to not play the streams in Kaffeine.
Check out Edit -> Preferences -> (Applications tab) and search for what you're using to open
the different file types. You'll have a dropdown menu beside each type to allow you change what you use.

BTW, RTE provide both Real and Windows media streams (Your preference is stored as a cookie I think).
The ones I've been using without problems are the wmv files. Maybe try the other link.
The option I have selected was set to "Use windows media player plugin" when I installed mozilla-mplayer.
I can also play the realmedia streams with mplayer, but the audio sync is not as good.

Hope that gets you a bit further!
