So I have an interview for Eircom tech support coming up...

    Hearing about a vacancy but finding it had been deleted off the website I was able to get in contact directly with Stream who recruit for Eircom and I secured an interview for a part time position over the phone.

    I'm wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what they're looking for, general tips for the interview and if anyone could tell me if they have had a good experience working for Eircom in this role.

    Also the confirmation email I received with directions etc said the interview will run for an hour and a half - can this be correct or are they just being careful not to say it will end too soon? I've only ever had mickey mouse jobs while studying and the possibility of an interview running that long is daunting!

    I worked for them for a while.

    The interview consisted of "when can you start?"

    Seriously, that was the entire interview. It was about 3 seconds long!

    That was before steam took over though...

    They're a nice enough company to work for.

    Is it dial-up or broadband support?

    In general, you will need to know how to configure e-mail in outlook, how to check your router settings, and how to make sure IE is set up correctly. If you use the internet at home, you probably already know how to configure these things. It is not a difficult job.

    They might ask "how do you deal with angry customers?". Of course, the answer is the customer is not angry with you, so you don't take it personally, and you will try to win him over by the end of the phone call -- by fixing his problem and remaining calm and polite.

    My interview was an hour an a half and consisted of a short entrance exam, a roleplay customer query and an interview with the team leader where I was asked some horrible questions like "what are your strenghts".

    This is the sort of thing that came up on the exam - I only struggled having to remember what UAC was (Windows Vista User Access Control) and whether POP3 was for incoming or outgoing emails - I knew the protocols are POP3 and SMTP but I couldn't quite place them correctly until the end.

    I took your advice and answered along those lines.

    I found out this afternoon I had gotten the job and I start a 2 week full time training course Monday so many thanks for the advice and I hope this thread comes in handy for someone else in the future :)

    It sounds like they've gotten their **** together since I left!

    Tech support as a part-time job is perfect. I did it for four years :)

    Yes, it's that bad.

    Be prepared for a lot of "the wireless isn't working", "what silver box?" and "I thought the broadband was wireless, why does it have to be plugged into a power socket?"

    No joke.

    Same here man. See you there. The fellas I went for an interview with a few weeks ago were all sound. A few were on boards too :D.
