Is this in any way true? Was a piece of advice I got and it sort of makes sense. In all of After Hours combined experience, what do you think of this philosophy?

Fake people aren't happy. From the day they're born to the day they die, they think they're happy, but trust me.
    They ain't.

A line in Batman Begins said by Michael Cane is pretty good - if you start prending to have fun, you just might end up having some by accident

    QFT

people who fake being happy end up hollow and empty inside, the more they suppress their inner misery the more it eats away at them till they can never truly understand happiness.

course some of us are just nasty little Knuts and we get our jollies by depressin the rest of ye:p

It's not so much pretending to be happy it's more just not allowing yourself to wallow.

I think if you always try to look on the bright side of life of course you're going to feel happier than if you're looking for the bad in everything.

It's all about the positive mental attitude. Having a rubbish day at work... Focus on the lovely dinner you're going to make when you get home.

Gretchen's other point is the especially interesting one: her claim that smiling makes her feel happy. This may sound like one of those wacky theories, but it turns out that a series of rigoruous studies by Robert Zajonc and his colleagues show that, in fact, smiling brings about physiological changes that make you feel happy, and frowning bring about changes that can make you feel sad and grumpy.

    It works.

I've spend three years telling myself I like my degree and everyone thinks I do, even myself, but from time to time the truth hits me. If I didn't tell persuade myself of this I wouldn't be able to study it or do anyway well. Means to an end.

Well there's something to be said for smiling more I must say. A smile tends to make people a lot more attractive, not just in terms of the opposite sex but when you meet someone who looks miserable you kinda think 'Can I be arsed?' If you try and be nice to people, people tend to feel bad about being nasty to you. However, people tend to not have much problem doing nasty things to people who seem nasty.

Theres also that thing that person said that time

"we'd probably have a lot of fun if we weren't so preocupied with trying to be happy all the time" or something to that effect, it loses a little in translation.....from english to gibberish.

but to the op, yeah like someone else said, if you are in a pisser and you just mope around feeling sorry for youself its not going to get any better.

One of the most nihilistic posts i've read on Boards tbh.
Does happiness matter- maybe the secret to fulfilment is to stop chasing "happiness" and embrace true apathy.
    Or not...

If I don't feel happy I fake it, nobody likes being round people who are all depresso all the time. At first they'll be all comforting and there for you, but then they'll just find your unhappiness infectious- misery loves company! So instead of losing your friends by wallowing in unhappiness, act happy and you may find yourself in happy situations.
