Upgrading camera / Wide lenses

I shoot with a 400D right now, I do like it a lot but I have some money coming through soon & was thinking about getting a semi-pro camera and keeping the 400d as a back up.
I was going to go for maybe a 30d or 40d, would it be worth it? Or should I just hold off until I can afford the 5d?
I'm also thinking about getting a wide angle lens in the near future since its something I have wanted for a while, should I go for the Canon or is the sigma just as good? I only shoot (digital) with canon so i'm not sure what the quality of the Sigma is like in comparison.
    Thanks in advance
    Donna

Depends on what you shoot, a lot of people will tell you to go with the 40d if you do sports but at the weekend I used my 5d and 120-300 f2.8 to great effect to give a thinner depth of field than the 1d. In short I would hold off for the 5d as it will get even cheaper and it is such a good machine to take pictures with, just beware about putting cheap glass on it as it will show any flaws.

Yea im on the 350D now and have some money coming in.. Im saving for the 5D its a full frame so its going to be great for wide angle lenses! They go for around 1300 on ebay, thats where im getting mine anyway about 1400 with vat added if coming from hong kong.

I think im going to sell my 350D though for some extra bits I want to buy some flashes and that wireless switch.

If you want a wide angle and a 5d in the future make sure the lens you buy can work on full frame, some of the Sigma/Canon only work on crop cameras. Canon 17-40L is really nice in the 5d and wide enough for me.

Dazftw, I got a wireless remote for my cameras for about £35 up in Calumet in Belfast.

I didn't notice much of an improvement in image quality when I upgraded from a 400d to a 40d. For me ISO noise is a big issue and the improvement was only marginal. I'd wait for the 5d.

I have the Canon 10-22mm and it's super wide. It's an EF-S however so won't work on the 5d.

I can say that no other camera produces shots like the 5d not even the 1dmk3 I have. Such a good camera, but it also punishes operator error too.

I was actually going to go Nikon and get the D700 (full frame 5fps) but then I found out Nikon dont have any full frame fisheyes, which was what I was looking for they have a DX one which means it has a 1.3 crop factor on the D700.

Canon have the 15mm fisheye which is what I have...

id like to switch but all the other cameras are just a bit too expensive for me :pac:

huh ?!? Nikon have a rather well regarded 16mm f/2.8 fisheye for full frame, and a 10.5mm for DX. They also have a couple of older AI/AIS manual focus fisheyes that would mount and meter on a D700, and are obviously full frame aswell, being designed originally for film.

Ah im not a nikon man so the only one I knew of was the 10.5 this has got me thinking now... ;) I might just hold out for the D700 now.. I appreciate you correcting me :) I might just be able to afford it if I sell all my lenses and stuff I have now.

I'm currently jonesing for a 5D myself to go with my 40D. As much as I love my 6 month old 40D, I kinda wish I'd saved for an extra few months for the 5D. If I had to buy again as an experienced photographer (I've had a 300D and a 400D before the 40D) I would have held out for the 5.

Will there be a flood of cheap 2nd hand 5D's on the market once the
    new cameras are announced ?

Might be better to get a 5D then after that ....(in September I think) ?

Just keep in mind if u decide to go to 5D you should wait because probably sooner then later 6D or whatever they will call it will be out...

5D is out already for quite long time without replacement
