Inguinal Hernia - Open Surgery?

I know this is probably like asking 'how long is a piece of string', but how long typically should one expect to take to recover from open surgery for an inguinal hernia?

My OH is getting surgery in a few weeks, its his second hernia, the first was done by key hole surgery and he was driving within a week, back to work within a fortnight.

    He's young (30's), fit & healthy.
Oh & they're using mesh to repair the hernia this time whereas they didn't last time (this one's on the opposite site).

He had his pre-op appointment with the consultant but typically didn't bother asking anything about this kind of stuff

Any info would be greatly appreciated :)
