I'd go for the slower 5,400 rpm to get longer out of the battery and reduce heat. Go for 7,200 rpm if you really need the performance increase.

It does boil down to choice really - personally, I'd go for a 7200RPM as my internal main drive, as I would want any and every speed gain (that said, 5400RPM drives are not that noticeably slower for most things - the only laptop hard drives I've used that are horribly slow are 1.8" 4200RPM ones, used in some ultra-portables). However, the reason I'd stick with the 7200RPM internally is that it is the only drive where the speed gain would help - whenever I need more space, I can always get another USB drive and the speed does not matter then, since you're already limited by the USB transfer speeds. But your mileage may vary and the 5200RPM could be a better fit...

As has been said its really down to choice ...

    You'll get a performance increase from the 7200 ...

I opted for the 5400 on my MBP as it'll suit me for the most part. The extra battery life is a plus for me and it already runs fairly hot when I'm using it so I don't need the extra heat.

If I need more storage ... thats what external drives are for (also not putting all your fish in the one basket can be good)
