To ensure they're getting the right parts in (if not stock), as different ages of car (or even within the same year) may have different parts. They can reference the chassis number to the exact model of car.

this is a quote from a site I came across when I owned one.

"The Miata (MX5) timing belt must be changed every 60,000 miles. Although the California Owner's Manual says 105,000 miles, this is just to satisfy a state requirement that says timing belts should last 100,000 miles or more. Still, it should be done at 60,000 miles. The Miata engine is a non-interference engine, meaning that the pistons will not crash into the valves. However, if you neglect this major service, you risk being stranded due to a belt break.

this is the kit your after

Thanks! Def going to get it done, just bizarre that my local garage didn't ask for chassis number and are charging half the price of the Mazda garage.Who do i trust? Mazda garage charging 720 euro and that was the cheapest of the Mazda garages!

Local garages will, 99 times out of 100, be cheaper than a main dealer and is very unlikely to do a worse job (often would be better) than a main dealer - you can trust either of them, but go with the local if its cheaper and you don't have a thing about dealer servicing.

As goes the chassis number, more than likely he knows from the year what parts are needed, or has all the possibilities in stock, and also won't be recording the work in a dealer system that records the chassis number. Its no mad conspiracy that the dealer asked for it.
