Hey im trying to setup a VPN host so i can connect to my home network from when im out and about.

Ive got the host setup and its working. I can connect to the VPN from a computer on my local network.

Ive setup port forwarding on 1723 to route to the computer with the vpn host.

When i try to connect to the vpn with my routers external ip address it stays on verifying username and password and eventually i get the error "remote computer failed to respond"

    Any idea what im missing?

edit: should probably ad that im using a Netgear WGR614v7

What Vpn client are you using? It's possible it may need more then 1 port open.

Also did you open the port for UDP or TCP?

Open the port on tcp, I believe that's your problem.

Open the port on tcp, I believe that's your problem.

just went to change it there and realised that it was open on both.

ive changed it to just TCP and it still does not work.

You might also need to configure your router for PPTP Passthrough. Port usage for IPSec is 500, 50-51. These ports will have to be forwarded to the VPN server's IP

Failing that I would guess it might be a configuration issue on the other machines end. Did you modify the tcp/ip settings to allow a ip range similar to the machine you are trying to remote in on?

nope added those ports still does not work.

how do i enable pptp passthrough and ive also read something about gre47 service. i dont see anything in my router regarding this.

how do i modify the tcp/ip settings to allow a ip range similar to the machine i am trying to remote in on

It depends on how you set up your vpn connection and what security features and accounts you chose to allow. Configuration of the vpn link is done through properties of the connection in the network connections Window.

Tbh can I recommend logmein. Would solve a lot of your problems, its free and very simple to use.
