Recovering lost data

Say I have a 8gig flash drive. If I format it and then copy 8gig of stuff to it is it possible at all to recover what was on it previously?

From my point of view it isn't, as how could their be fragments of old files there if there's no free space?

    Thanks

There could be tiny snippets of data left in slack space. That is, sectors which haven't been completely filled.

Would overwriting it in ext3 work? Doesn't that pretty much fill the disk to its entirety?
