Irish News Media Awards - Are there any?

ESB used to sponsor news awards, but not any more :(

Other than Colman Byrne's student news media awards, I'm not aware of any.
NUJ got a call from me on the same - but, they're not aware of any either!

I am all too painfully aware about the dumbing-down of "real" news in favour of soft-sell celebrity sh1te, unchallenged regurgitated press releases, etc - but really this is getting ridiculous if there aren't awards anymore for "proper" hard news stories in the public interest... I hope I'm wrong on this one and that there are prestigious awards, so if so,

What awards are there - and how can one go about filing copy, as it were?

    Thanks in advance :)

There is the Media and Multicultural Awards that has a couple of media awards -

but that's it as far as I know. It's crazy really, that there's nothing else. It's a whopper gap in the market for someone who has experience of putting on events.

ESB pulled sponsorship of the awards a couple of years ago and it died with that. They were a joke anyway, one guy won with an article that he rewrote from the Telegraph.
There is a Business Journalists Awards thing run by Smurfit School of Business and Lochlann Quinn and while they seem a bit better there was again a nominee, one of whose submissions was a rewrite of a story that had already been in the Sundays. Very strange. Basically the judging panels seem to do no research into the originality of the story.

Regarding radio journalism, The PPI Radio Awards have categories for best News Story, News Programme and Current Affairs Programme.

I was a judge in two or three catergories in them a few years ago: it made me determined never to enter any awards scheme ever, ever again. Absolute subjective nonsense.
