    hi

how early do you need to think about putting a child's name down for national school? are waiting lists full up years in advance, or does it depend on the area? will schools even entertain requests if it's too early?

totally depends on the area and the type of school you want. some schools accept names of babies only weeks/months old, others you can get a place up to the Sept/Oct before you want child to join. Best idea is to identify maybe a few you are interested in and ring around and ask for their enrolment policies and what their general entry requirements are. some schools will have such a big demand that they limit their places to siblings of current/past pupils, or children in locality will have priority. they are all different.

I agree with the above. However I would suggest that you talk to a few people (who have children going to school) in the area in which you live and ask them for their recommendations.

Also it is definitely a good to sign up to as many schools as possible. At least this way you may have a choice.

Most people sign em up when they are born. Why wait?
