Joe Hachem on being a pro

Joe Hachem did a soft interview here on Melbourne local AM radio.

2 things he said that interested me, firstly he said he does not make a profit from poker, he expects to cash only 1 in 10 times he plays. He makes his living now through indorsments from Stars, Wild Turkey and The Crown Casino.

Of course he didnt mention cash, but the best thing about Oz is there is no tax on gambling....nice

And he said he was taxed 30% of his WSOP win immediately by the US Gov, and that Oz and the US have no agreement where he can make some arrangement on expences etc while playing there.

I played on the same table as him recently in The Crown, seems an alright bloke, course he couldnt make a bet without someone going all over him.

    Still, I'd like his job.

    IIO

Thinking ahead when i win the worlds series ME next year, does anyone know if Ireland has a tax treaty with the US. Or do we get done over as well?

I heard there are expensive lawyers who specialize in this.

    Perhaps, somebody could enlighten me.

There is an agreement with Ireland, you will get it back.

As for Hachem, if hes losing it doesnt matter that gambling is tax free.

Many insiders are aware of the 30% tax on gross winnings of non-resident aliens that is imposed according to U.S. tax laws. There is some good news here, however. A close examination of the various tax treaties has revealed that a total of at least fifteen countries are exempt from the normal 30% withholding required by tax codes. Tax treaties supersede tax code. This means that residents of these countries will avoid all tax burden from any form of gaming while in the United States merely by requesting treaty exemption on form 1001. A passport may be requested for verification of residence.
The updates list of countries for which this option is available:

    Czech Republic
    Denmark
    Finland
    France
    Germany
    Hungary
    Italy
    Liechtenstein
    Malta
    Netherlands
    Russia
    Slovenia
    Spain
    Tunisia
    United Kingdom

Not sure how accurate this is.

    Hachem is a whiney fúck.

Also, people who somehow pronounce his name Hatch-em should be put down.
