New VW Golf effect on old Golf prices

I'm looking to buy a 2006 ish Golf GTI towards the end of this year, but I read in the papers over the weekend that the facelifted Golf is imminent.

I want a sub 40k miles car, but don't want to spend more than €20k. This is proving a little tricky to find at the mo. Does anyone know if I can expect used Golf prices to come down any now that the new model has been unveiled? If so, when is this likely to happen?

I wouldn't bet on it. I'd say that the new Sirocco (out in 2009?) will slow down the sales of the new GTI.

I'm not entirely sure. They were calling it a Mk VI Golf in the paper on Sunday (I forget which one), but it just looks like a facelifted Mk V to me.

This is the test car, though they had what looked like an official picture in the paper.

iirc it has a different, cheaper to manufacture suspension set up.

Think I saw that too - private sale I believe.

The new Scirocco looks lovely like.

Nice, but the mileage is a little higher than I'm looking for. I won't be buying til November or December, hopefully the prices will have fell a little by then. I'm clutching at straws, I know....

that car is pretty good vaule with the auto box. But you got get the 18" wheels they really set the car off. the ride is spot on too, not too firm.

Probably a touch optimistic to hope to get a 06 for 20k this side of January.... if you do, chances are it will be a scruffy high miler! Cheapest 05 I've seen yet was 20k.

It'll take a while for the new Mk6 to impact Mk5 residuals significantly, especially considering the MK6 GTI will probably take several months to arrive after the standard models.
