Samsung Series 6

Has anyone bought one of these? I'm buying a new LCD/Plasma in either 40"or 46" and am thinking about this one. I've got around €1500 to spend, will go more if I think its worth it. Would this give me the best value for my money?

I would be using it for PS3, NTL digital, and I have some HD content on my laptop which has a DVI connection. I also hope to get Sky HD in the next few months when I move apartments.

Also does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy one of these is? I would probably rather buy it in one of the Irish stores rather than online but wouldn't rule out online either.

I'm thinking of getting the 40" myself - either that or the Sony W4000.

The Samsung is available from SamsYerMan in Belfast for £1049 delivered to the south with an additional 3 year warranty. The cheapest I've found it in any local store is Soundstore (Limerick) who are selling it for €1349 with the standard one year warranty.

I've been shopping for a series 6 46". Power City were the cheapest at €1750 (you have to ask for it withiut the DVD recorder) I took that quote to DID and they went to €1720. Series 7 is due so by the Jan sales these are going to be alot cheaper.

BTW Pixmania are worth a look as they will deliver for €62

Considering a 46" W4000 my self as well, trying to figure out if the 50hz on the Sony versus 100hz of the Samsung is deal breaker.

Take a look here - richersounds in Belfast.

The poster had issues but seemed to be getting them resolved with a little help. Also, MD of richer was happy to offer refund etc.

Bought this TV(40") in currys Newry about a month back got it for 799 sterling (approx 1000 euro) great tv!!!!

SD (SKY) is pretty good after a bit of tweaking, upscaled dvds look great, dont play games so cant comment on that.

Well worth the trip up from Dublin IMO.

Price increased again 1029.00 sterling comes with free blu ray player
worth watching the website as they tend to offer deals every now and then

I bought the 46 inch series 6 a month ago and have to say I was VERY DISAPPOINTED with it for the first week. The standard picture settings "out of the box" were attrocious. It was without doubt the worst display I'ver ever seen on a tv. However, another Boardsie pointed me towards the recommended settings (that are available online btw) and after putting these settings into the tv (and there's a lot of changes to be made), the picture improved considerably. I also had to update the firmware which was easy enough and now, at the moment, I'm happy with it. I'm currently watching Stargate Atlantis on DVD and the upscaling is excellent, near Blu Ray quality. Games are also very good on it too.

I bought the tv through Richersounds and paid €1,360 for it delivered which is considerably cheaper than any of the shops in this country. And as another poster mentioned, I was offered a replacement tv or a refund by Richersounds when I reported how bad the picture was initially so I'd recommend them for their customer service in addition to having the cheapest price around.

How long did the delivery take and does that have the 5 year guarantee? Do people think that 5 year guarantees are even necessary on LCDs?

Also does anyone know if this tv supports MPEG4 for the DTT trials?

I presume it does. There was a big song and dance last year about the Samsung IDTV featuring a built-in MPEG4 AVC(H.264) HD Decoder. The A656 models are IDTV as well so they should feature the MPEG4 decoder.

A friend of mine contacted Samsung via the website asking the same question and got a ridiculous response along the lines of "What will you be using the tuner for?"

For a start - the F868BD model is from September last year, the A656A is available since around March/April this year.

There's a good review of the LE40A656A here.

I bought the 40" version from Power City 6 weeks ago for €1349 in Blanchardstown.
I could not be happier with the quality of picture.
It brings viewing of TV to a new level. It is especially great on digital but lacks a little in Analogue. I have not got HD pictures but cannot imagine how my current digital reception could be improved.
It did take a couple of weeks to get the settings that I liked best but it is worth the work.

You will not be disappointed. BY the way the red hue on the Bezel is great to look at and the swivel action is a great bonus.

I ordered my tv (the 46 inch model) through richersounds in Belfast but as they are primarily a "sound store", i.e. amps and speakers, they carry very little tv stock so they sourced the tv from their parent company in the UK and it was delivered a week later to my door. All in it cost €1,380 which is a lot cheaper than prices down here.

Popped into the local Currys today and saw the 40 inch model for €1349. The same TV can be bought from Currys in Newry for £849 which is about €1070. Big difference and definitely worth a trip or an email to Richersounds to check their price.

I don't know whether to get the 40" A656, the 40W4000 or wait for the new Samsung in January...

You could probably get the Sam from Richersounds for ~1k or less compared to the Sony it should be very good value.

Somewhat off-topic, but mind if I ask how long your deliveries from Richer Sounds took? TV was picked up by their courier yesterday but I'm not sure when to expect it exactly.

It's pretty quick. My card was charged on the Thursday (when it was dispatched) and I received the TV the next day.

Could someone tell me the difference between these two samsung 46" LCD's, the cheaper one appears to the series 6:

    http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct/SAMS-LE46N87

The more expensive one is older technology, its just Samsung mucking up their pricing to retailers.

Does anyone on here have setting that they find to be good for NTL/UPC? I'm watching the GAA at the minute and its fairly poor to be honest.

I was checking prices for the 40" Samsung 6 series in Cork last week. It's virtually the same price everywhere (1350euros), except for Harvey Norman who charge 50 euros extra (to pay for their awful adverts no doubt).

But it kills me that Currys charge €300 extra in Ireland than they do in the UK. Even allowing for VAT and "a bit extra just for the hell of it", the absolute most they should be charging here is €1150. Even that would be unjustifiable in my view (although I'd probably buy), but 1350 is just extortion.

Anyway, in one shop, the guy told me to wait until after "the trade show in September". He said they'd be able to offer the best price after that.

...Before I get on the phone to Richer Sounds, Belfast, can anyone tell me which trade show he was talking about and when it's on? If it's the end of September I think I'll order from Belfast tomorrow as I can't see them dropping more than €300 anyway.

Richer Sounds aren't selling the Samsung models anymore.

    Damn. :(
Thanks for that though. Does anyone know when this "trade show in September" is on and how soon after prices should drop?

...or have any suggestion on where else to source a Samsung LE40656A?

    sold out... damn.

Was really thinking of getting this tv as im gonna get sky HD too. I think it looks great but finding a good price is hard. This Pixmania price isn't too bad.

Somewhat off topic - - But would anybody consider the Phillips as an alternative. I think it looks pretty cool but the specs aren't quite as good as the samsung...

I used to buy Philips and was happy with them, but after getting a multiregion dvd player (some 10 years ago) I realised that none of their TVs at the time would show an NTSC image in colour. Luckily I had a dvd player that could display them in PAL, but still it turned me off Philips -especially when a friend of mine had the same problem with a different model around 5 years later and he couldn't find a workaround.

That's not really a reflection on today's models (about which I know nothing), but once bitten twice shy.
