I suppose this is a question for the engineers with at least a few years experience in the industry.

I've been becoming more disillusioned with my current engineering role after a good few years in it. After getting a degree and then a masters, I initially started out in a high tech small Irish semicon company (wish I'd never left ) and went to a big litho company in the semicon industry. It looked good on paper, but has never materialised into the job I was hoping for. Unfortunately, the money is very good with good perks, so this means if I left, I'd have to take a pay cut :( .

I've decided lately I'd rather like my job, than hate it and get paid well. The way I see it is if I do a job I like, there's more chance of me progressing, which would = more money....eventually.

So to eventually to get to the question,
If you could change the type of engineering you do,
    Would you do it?
What would you change it to?
and What type of engineer has the best opportunitys in Ireland at present?

I have finished a degree in Electronic Engineering and I have always
regretted since about 2nd year that I didn't do Computer Science.

I got really big into computers around that time but there was no
way I could have known my interest when I was filling out that
CAO form in 6th year. :)

In terms of other types of Engineering, I have no desire to be in any
other area. Maybe Electrical Engineering if I had to choose as that
would have allowed me to work in the field of Renewable energy which
I would like to get into.

I learned early on that I would most certainly prefer to be happy in my
job than earn tonnes of money and be miserable. My dream job is one
which involves computers, loads of collogues my age and a good bit of
    craic in the office. :)

So to answer your questions directly.

    Would you do it?
Probably(Although I don't fancy another 4 years of Maths tbh):(
What would you change it to?
    Probably Electrical Engineering.
and What type of engineer has the best opportunitys in Ireland at present?

    Hard to say.

Civil engineers were probably cleaning up the last 5 years but are feeling
the pinch now I am sure.

I think Electrical Engineers will be important for the future due to increasing
energy requirements for the country and for the inevitable push towards
    renewable energy.

I'm not really experienced in any other area so I cant really say for sure.
