    HEY,

    Am looking for some advice. Have a Kona Paddywagon for over a year and do all my commuting and cross-training on it. Do at least one 2 hour cycle per week on it and was doing 4hrs as training for W200.

    Was wondering about upgrading to make it more challenging (Find a adence of 80's suits me more than 90 - 100's as am tall) - changing the rear cog to 14 from 16.

    Is this enough? Should I go to 12 or should I consider changing the front cog?
    Anyone done this?

    any advice appreciated

    To be honest I wouldn't bother and try working on your cadence instead. I used to be around a "natural 80" myself but have increased to 90-100+ this year, especially when out with others. 6ft although not sure there is a correlation? I reckon it is a definate benefit to the increased cadence, certainly gives more options if you can comfortably go at 110-120 for periods. Challenge yourself with how fast you can get from A to B, or up a hill, there is nothing inherently challenging about a lower gear other than potential knee injury.*

    Changing the rear cog is likely to be a hell of a lot cheaper than the front so I would look at that first if you do want to change. You can compare ratios simply by dividing, or alternatively look at Sheldon Brown's gear calculator to see what any particular combination gets you.
