    Hi,

Does anyone know what this is?

I'm talking about the green thing. has a box into which 8 bronze prongs plug into it. It is just beneath the power switch on my Dell 1501. One of the holes under neath it though is damaged and as a result I can't get sound on my laptop. I tried googling the codes on it in the hope of finding out what the devil it is so I could get another one but to no avail. I would appreciate any help.

    Here are the codes:
    C2A 32FX2DB(could be an 8)008

    GXB-VDA 94V-D04 0646

Do the media controls connect into it, if so it would control all that functionality.

What do you mean by media controls?

I was poking around at the prongs with a screwdriver and accidentally hotwired the laptop to turn it on. All the prongs work, I've checked them with a phase tester.

Buttons like play, pause, fast forward, increase volume, decrease volume etc.

No. It is not usually uncovered. It looks like a circuit board

They aren't buttons, they're just lights.

Do you have a bigger picture of it. That one is very small.

I was working in Dell untill 2 weeks ago and have built more of those then I care to think about

As few as I'm aware that circuit board is only the laptops power board. It could be shorting out other parts of the laptop though. Your best bet is to try and send it back to Dell. its a 30 sec job to replace and I'm not sure where you can get the power board but ebay might be your best bet

Are their any leads running from the keyboard to it?

I remember reading somewhere that Dell have a secret agreement with the US government since 9/11 to log each and every keypress of a computer for transmission to Us government servers each time the laptop is connected to the internet.

In this way potential terrorist plots are discovered as the terrorists type them out.

    :P
