so i booked my test with SGS the other day, over the phone.

"hi there, i just want to see about booking my test please"
    "no problem, would 9.30 suit?"
    "sure, what date?"
    "oh, in the morning..."

i laughed, she laughed. a *little* too soon for me....

here's a thing though. once you pass your test, how long does it take for the official licence to be issued. i'm away on a big trip a couple of days after my test, and would love to have my licence. if i pass, fingers crossed, is there anything i can do to hasten the process?

My GF passed with SGS in Tallaght, she now needs an eye exam to send in to get the license so between you getting an eye exam and sending it off to be processed and them to send it back to you....three weeks maybe, I'm not shure if theres a deadline though, just ring them and ask how long you have.

How come she needs an eye exam after passing the test? I thought once you had one done for your provisional/learner permit that was it?

no idea, she sent it in and they returned it with a note saying an eye exam was needed to process her license. She also tells me the 'pink slip' is valid for two years:confused:

So I guess the OP has two years to get back from holidays:confused:

edit: I think her provisional was just out of date, thats why an eye exam was needed.

It seems to depend on the MTO. Most insist on posting it while a few do it on the spot.

The Certificate of Competency is valid for two years but the holder may not legally drive on a motorway or drive unaccompanied (if applicable) while utilising it.

once you apply for your licence (i want to apply by pst) can you drive unaccompanied?

as i will be applying by post i wont have a reciept saying i applied.

guess i'll be taking a trip to the MTO that day so! i'll be tempting fate getting everything ready beforehand!

washout, you aren't allowed to drive unaccompanied until you have your drivers licence in your possession

I passed my test in SGS in Tallaght in June on a Monday afternoon. I sent off the completed forms that evening and my licence arrived on the Thursday morning! If you hand it in yourself, it should arrive within a day or two.

Even thought the vast majority of gardai wouldn't pursue it anyway I'll just clarify the 10 days to produce - it's 10 days to 'produce' a valid licence or other documentation for the day when stopped!

One can't subsequently obtain documents and produce them!

I was going to make the same comment...if i send in for my licence today by post (with todays day on the form).

and get stopped tommorow. and say its in the post.

wont the licence come back to me with the date i put on the form?

I was also in a Garda Station yesterday to get the full licence form.

couincidently they didnt have any lol.

but i asked the rather alarmingly young looking guard wheter would be penalised if i drove unacompanied after just passing the test.

he said no you wouldnt b epenalised to just keep a copy of the competency cert and provo licence in the car with you. (but judging his age i am reluctnat to believe him)

    Yes, point taken.

That's very common and very annoying especially after several days. Most Gardai don't seem to give a toss about running out of forms even though they are usually advertised as being available in your local Garda Station.

He probably meant that the vast majority of Gardai (I'd say 99%) wouldn't pursue it.
