Planting in big pots versus the ground?

If I plant two plants together (logan berry and gooseberry bush ) in a huge tub will they be ok together? Roots strangling each other? Will the clay pot get frozen and freeze the roots? Will the soil be "exhausted" within a year or two or can I keep it fertile with something?
