Where to Stay in Prague

Hey, i've been searching this forum for places to stay in Prague with not much luck. Been looking online but I don't really trust the pics and sites of all these apartments/pension places. I was in Prague briefly last year and stayed in a nice pension, but i'm going on a "full" holiday with a couple mates and i'm in charge of organising the bloody thing, they don't want to spend much money on where we're sleeping (yet still have the comforts - go figure).

Can anyone recommend a couple good/cheap places to stay in Prague? I've heard good things about renting apartments? Thanks.

Yeah if I was going back would consider the apartment option. As for cheap accommodation stayed in Hotel Ibis on Katerinska St and Czech Inn nearby which was a really nice hostel/hotel. Would recommend both places. PM for more info if you want.

www.pragueapartment.cz - some very well located apts.
www.marys.cz - apts all over the place.

Both good and trustworthy. Mary's have been in business there for years.

If you walk up towards the museum there are people there who will offer accommodation. They will easily spot the tourists and approach you. Last time I was there I got an apt. from an old guy who had fought in some of the wars. He had a map and pics of the apt and we haggled over the price. Got the apt. for great value, few stops out on the underground and the old guy was a great character with some funny stories. Much cheaper than booking anything on line.

Without a doubt the best place I've ever stayed in Prague is the http://www.pachtuvpalace.com/ (Pacthuv Palace).

It's a five start boutique hotel right on the edge of old town, within walking distance (seriously, a couple of minutes max) of Charles bridge and pretty much perfect for those romantic getaways... four posters, unique rooms, suites, great service and everything done right.

Couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough.

Has anyone had problems booking accomodation in Prague and getting charged extra because of the currency difference? Im about to book a place (the Green Lobster, anyone stayed there?) and have been quoted a price in Euro. I've read a post or two on this forum from a good while ago now about someone who got charged up to 20% extra because of the currency difference.

The price they quote is the price charged to the CC right? I'll ask them as well obviously but would like to hear from someone who's been there as well.

We stayed with Mary's apartments - we had a one bedroomed place really near everything. They were great - even picked us up from the train station! The apartment was grand. Clean - lots of hot water and in a nice old building. This was a while ago, I've just looked at their websites and all the apartments seem to have been given an upgrade.

This called Dynamic Currency Conversion - a well known scam to rip off tourists which is very prevalent in Prague (and also in Ireland and Britain). Basically the establishment (hotel, restaurant) offers to charge you in your home currency and then absolutely fleeces you with conversion charges. Do not allow yourself to be ripped off by this and absolutely insist on paying your bill in Czech crowns - by doing this you will be charged your bank's rate instead of your hotel's "all-tourists-are-suckers" extortionate exchange rate, which as a previous poster discovered, could cost an extra 20%.

When you're in Prague, watch out for this in any shops or restaurants where you're using your credit card, and again, insist on paying in Czech currency.

This scam is not limited to Prague - it's also very prevalent in Dublin, especially in shops frequented by tourists, and I've come up against it in London as well.

Thanks for the reply. Is it strange that they're asking for the full price now? My sister travels a lot and said it was a bit odd that they're asking for the full price in advance (I get a 20% discount if I book now by the way). She said usually you would pay a deposit and pay the rest of it when you arrive.

Most hotels ask for your credit card details when you book - they usually then charge you the price of one night's accommodation if you don't turn up. It's pretty common practice.

If you're worried about your hotel, check it out on tripadvisor.com - you should get a good idea about whether it's reputable or not from there.
