    It was a 2007 film...
Not an especially good one either, I expected a lot more from the Coen brothers...

I saw it in 2007 so I can say it was my film of 2007 and Batman film of 2008(so far) :)

It was a good film but I don't see what all the fuss is about. Everyone just creamed themselves at the taught of a new Coen bros. movie as if they can do no wrong
    Intolerable Cruelty

IMO .... Good film, good acting. Dissapointing ending. Not the best ever though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 756 ✭✭✭D.S.

Def don't think it was the best ever. V v good film tho. Thought the ending was good not great. I thought the transition from a film about josh brolin to tommy lee could of been handled better..,

With the amount of ****e that gets released these days I think its fair to say it's a great film, relatively.

Good film but not a great film (Eamonn Dunphy voice optional)

    LOL :pac:

It was alright, certainly overrated though. As someone said the gas cannister to the head thing became comical it was used so much. I did a count of
the people he murdered, it was something like 17. IIRC the old man in the petrol station and another guy in the office were the only people Bardem interacted with in the film that he didnt actually kill

But as Schism says, with the amt of sh1te this year etc etc. I havent stepped into the flicks since the brilliant In Bruges, the previews before it for the upcoming months were horrendous.

I saw it last December, but it was released here in January, so i'd say it counts, as most people here will have seen it in 2008. Sorry to be awkward :P

A great, stylish thriller. Which is what I expect from the Coens. I don't think anyone would say they can do no wrong, but they're extremely talented film-makers. I enjoyed the hell out of this film, and hopefully they can produce something decent out of Burn After Reading.

Decent film........but not an especially great one..
Said more about the quality of film-making when it was released than anything else..
Brolin and Bardem turned in decent performances whereas Tommy Lee Jones was just Tommy Lee Jones (and how many times have we seen that)..

Having said all that, while its certainly worth a watch, I think its most certainly a film which would have been dismissed away if it hadn't of been made by the Coens, as no more than a somewhat interesting thriller..

    7/10

Indeed it's true that their reputation precedes them on every film they make, but when they hit the mark most of the time it's with good reason.

At the end of the day there's no denying a good film and I'll bet a decent proportion of the punters who went to see this had no idea who made it.

well in fairness no country for old men was a book by cormac mcarthy so the cohen bros' were fairly limited in how they could change it so if the ending as everyone here is saying is ****e its cause of the book:pac:

    Tell that to Frank Darabont.

Stephen King is hardly Cormac McCarthy though.

Agree with MooseJam about the over reliance on this prop, and Mehh about no ending. Also thought that there was to much emphasis on violence, rather than solid acting.

Actually I hate Jones in films "searching henhouses"etc, but thought he was bareable in this
the guy with the canister seemed to be looking for the money before it went missing

Many films based on books have endings changed which often works for the better.
Jaws, Jurassic Park and The Mist would be prominent examples.
Doesn't matter who the author is, if the ending needs to be changed then change it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭Driver 8

I agree with your general point, but didn't feel the ending of the book in this instance needing changing in the slightest.

Very good more. An interesting thing I noticed (told by a mate) was that there was no music. Just shows how good the acting was. Didn't need sound effects to improve it.

Very, very good - really caught the Cormac McCarthy vibe I thought - but recommend reading the book over the film. The Border Trilogy is wonderful - cinematic in scope. Outer Dark is a smaller, perhaps more accessible (thought interminably bleak) option . . .

    Nay.

What they said. I didnt see anything particularly great about this movie, the teasers and trailers over hyped it a lot! I felt that it was 'the movie' to talk about, recommend and like just because of the Coen Bro's connection.

I watched it once, dont think I'd bother watching it again to be honest. It goes down with 'Wind that Shakes the Barley' as a movie let down for me :(

Was really disappointed. Couldn't wait to c it so i begged my friend to come with me in cinema. I was bored... she was tearing her hair out!!!

What was that speech tommy lee gave at the end about?

Javier Bardem was good alright but i just didn't get it.
