Can some explain to me the theory of background correction in uv analysis? Particularly the compensation method of background correction?

    Many thanks.

What are you using for UV analysis?

Generally if you are performing analysis on dissolved sample what you would do is perform a UV of the solvent. This can then be subtracted from a UV analysis of the dissolved material and will give an absorbtion pattern for the material in question.

By taking a background it means that you have removed any absorbtion that might be due to the cuvette (the sample holder) which may typically be made from either plastic (cheap and absorbs some UV) or quartz which are better but still can affect your spectra. It also removes absorbtion due to the solvent, and since solvents aren't always a clean as we might like this is very important.

This is what I remeber from using a UV-Vis in the lab, but again, if you had more specifics about the UV analysis you plan on doing I might be able to give more details.
