Nursing Question

I have a friend who has been working as a nurse for the past few years and she's getting itchy feet about trying something different, but not that different.

I know nothing about these things, so I was no help to her to her all when we last talked about this.

So I was wondering: if you are a qualified nurse, what else can you do with those qualifications? Any education-based jobs she could apply for? Or maybe something to do with children? Something she could springboard into, with her background in nursing? Even if there was more training, or whatever, is there anything where a background in nursing is an asset?

Thanks (this is so not my area of knowledge :D )

What area of nursing is she working in? She could work in places like St. Michael's house with the disabled kids if she wanted to work with children. She could do some extra work with event medics as a nurse for concerts etc. which I hear is decent pay. She could apply to the ambulance service and train as a paramedic...there are loads areas she could get into. More info would be better.

Thanks for quick reply. I'll get more details and post them here.

As far I know she's been nursing for two/three years with stints on a cardiac ward and a geriatric ward. She hasn't worked with children at all.

As far as an office job goes, she could move into medical underwriting/life assurance underwriting with her medical background.

Ah, now that's exactly the sort of stuff that would never occur to me. Thanks for that. I'll read up on it and pass it along.

    Thank you very much.

Some nurses become drug reps. Drug companies prefer their sales reps to have some sort of medical background.
two/three years with stints on a cardiac ward
Presumably then she is an Registered General Nurse (RGN).

(There are four other types: RNID, RMHN, RSCN and RM).

    What about doing medical recruitment?

She could also apply for work in a contract research organisation (CRO) - they organise and run clinical trials. She could work "in the field" in the clinical setting or alternatively in the office doing the data analysis etc.

Quintiles and ICON are 2 big CROs based in Dublin. Take a look at irishjobs.ie - a quick google shows up a CRA job in Quintiles (this would be "in the field" work - though you'd be based in the office at times) available at the moment which your friend would be qualified for.

Thanks to everyone who posted replies. It is much appreciated. I've started passing on the suggestions (much to her surprise).

She's a general nurse who trained/works in Northern Ireland and has worked one year in Coronary Care and four months in Care Of The Elderly.

There is a nusing forum at
    http//www.jackiebrownmedical.ie/forum
They also have a medical sales forum
    and a Carers forum.
I looked at the medical sales stuff on the main site too in the advice section...
    http://www.jackiebrownmedical.ie/advice/medicalsales.php?url=medsales

The forum is new but I think there is a little activity in the nurse section... not much in the carer section for me though
