hi i am planning to buy a 900 classic i own a 1993 5 door at the moment . i love those saab . i hesitate between a 1986 flat front model 99000mls or a 1989 slant front model with 12100mls. both of them are turbo 16 valve.is there any mechanical difference between the two. as i m been told that the 86 model would be more tempermental. any suggestion? thanks.

I'd say the person who told you the 86 model would be more 'temperamental' is mixing up a few things: you have the old 8 Valve Turbo engines and the 16 Valve engine, either in Full Pressure Turbo and Low Pressure Turbo spec. The older 8 Valves are always Full pressure turbo, and some would say they are a bit more temperamental, although I personally would not aggree with that. I have a 8v Turbo and driven lots of 16 Valves and apart from the odd 15-20bhp difference, I would say the 16 delivers the power smoother.

The 16 valve Turbo engines in the 86 and 89 models are roughly the same in those two cars but you will have to check if they're either LPT's or FPT's (low pressure turbo or full pressure turbo). The main difference is that a Low Pressure Turbo has a lower turbo boost, but kicks in sooner, giving you turbo boost in the lower rev ranges. The full pressure turbo has a higher Turbo boost pressure, which kicks in later but lasts longer, making the car faster. I think the gear box on the FPT has a higher final drive...

If the 86 car does not have a Catalytic converter, that's plus on the performance end too.

One other thing to bear in mind, the 86 model could still have the old hub system. I think this was changed over in 86. So the dodgy handbrake system was moved from front wheel hub to rear wheel, and the new system is more reliable. However, this means that older alloys (like the old Inca's) do not fit on later post-86 models.
