    Hi all.

I have an idea for a new thread on the tv forum. Bascially people will name a favourite show of theirs, and list some similar shows that people may like.

So, lets say I like Sopranos. I'd then recommend Oz and The Wire.

In the OP, I'd list this as follows:
    Sopranos: Oz; The Wire

Then if someone posts a reply saying they like
The Sopranos: Oz, The Wire and The Shield

the OP would change to something like:
Sopranos: Oz (+2); The Wire (+2); The Shield

On the flip side, if thinks a show isn't similar i.e.
The Sopranos: Oz, The Wire (-1) and The Shield

    The OP will now be
Sopranos: Oz (+2); The Wire (+2, -1); The Shield

Confused? I don't blame you:) We may have to tweak the system as we go to make it more user friendly/understandable, but lets see how we get on for now.

I think this would be a great way to get to find out about TV shows that they might not have heard about, but would like.

So lets say you're just after finishing watching the last Episode of The Sopranos and loved it. What do you watch next? From this thread you will get recommendations

I'm not sure if this thread will take, but I think its a good idea and worth a try.

Feel free to list any TV show you want, and others you think are similar in terms of theme, dialogue, etc.

To give an example of what I mean, even though I would rate The West Wing as one of the best shows ever, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to people who love The Sopranos because it it so different in terms of pace, themes, subject matter etc. But this is up to the posters own discression. I won't edit any recommendations. The voting system, where every recommendation of a show adds 1 to it score should take care of this.

All feedback on the system, or recommendations for improving it are recommended.

Damn it TarfHead, I hadn't thought of "unrecommending" shows:D

Ok, I've changed the system slight, adding your recommendations to my OP.

I've added in your minus scores for Dexter in the relevant shows.

I've also Sorted the main show title alphabetically, and the recommendations in descending order by votes.

Thanks for your votes. I've been meaning to watch Brotherhood, but never got around to it. Will do so now.....see, the recommendations have had their first success:P

you know you can only edit a post for 3days or so, if this actually takes off and people continue to make recomendations the OP wont be able to be used.

plus if like in dexters case you have (+1-1) why not just remove it as it has zero.

and if i say (Sopranos: The Wire) i think that should count both ways

    anyway:

    Sopranos: The Wire
    The Wire: Sopranos

    West Wing: Studio 60
    Studio 60: West Wing

    South Park: The Boondocks
    The Boondocks: South Park

    Band of Brothers: Generation Kill
    Generation Kill: Band of Brothers

    Weeds: Entourage
    Entourage: Weeds

    Father Ted: Black Books
    Black Books: Father ted

I hadn't realised that. That will call for a change of plan;). I'll continue to edit the OP while I can. When I can no longer update it, I'll great a copy of the post every Monday and update it with new recommendations (if there are any). I'll see if I can get a mod to update the OP with the alterations.

I had thought about that. I'm trying to be impartial with the thread. If one person recommends Dexter, while a second disagrees, which is correct? To remove recommendation altogether is being disrespectful to the person who refered it IMO. Its saying that because someone disagrees with their opinion, so their opinion is being ignored. I chose the (+1,-1), because someone can the see that there are contrasting views on whether the programme might be suitable.

The alternative is to just use a (0), showing that recommendations have be offset by differing opinions.

    Thoughts?
and if i say (Sopranos: The Wire) i think that should count both ways

You're right. I had this done in most cases, but missed one or two. I think I've corrected that now, let me know if I missed any.

Thanks for your recommendations, they have been added.
