6 Days too long in Bangkok?

    Hi,

Myself and some friends are heading to Thailand for three weeks. We've scrapped our attempt to cram Cambodia and Laos into the first week. Instead we're thinking of six days in Bangkok and the rest of the time on Koh Phanang and Koh Phi Phi.

Is 6 days too long in Bangkok? We want to head out every night. Is there enough to fill six days and nights?

    Thanks!

Usually people decide to spend only the 1 or 2 days there which I wouldn't agree with.

6 days though? I couldn't tell you without knowing what type places you'd be interested in going out to.

If you're just looking to see the main tourist attractions though then 6 days is far too much.

    It depends.

There's enough to keep you occupied in Bangkok for years if you like the place. Some people don't like it so 6 days would be too long.

You probably won't know til you get there but why do you need to decide before you go? Play it by ear...stick around if you like it and head for the islands if you don't.

i've been to to bangkok twice and found that two or three days is more than enough time in the place, my advice would be to get a flight to koh samui and spend 3 or 4 days there or if you dont mind a boat ride skip samui and head straight to koh tao

I'm Just back from Thailand 3 days, i stayed 2 nights in Bangkok on the Khaosan Road, then went down to Phuket don't go there its a kip don't go to Samui either unless your getting a flight down there to get a boat. Best places i went to were Phi Phi,Koh Tao,Koh Phagnan.

Samui and Phuket are both like tenerife now.Phi Phi is still paradise even though it is getting more touristy Koh Tao is really chilled out, its a real divers island if your interested in getting your PADI license Koh tao would be the best place to do it.Only went to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon party and it didn't dissapoint it was amazing.

I found when I was there that three days is enough in bangkok itself but you can do day trips up north... we did one up near the burma border and for the equivalent of €15 we did elephant trekking, the tiger temple, wildlife park, bridge over the river kwai, rafting and lunch (which id reccommend avoiding) and a waterfall stop...

Its so worth going and there is loads of places on Khosan Road that offer different packages, and you'll get dropped back where the pick you up, just have your hostel booked..

as for travelling down to the islands we got the night train as far as surat thani, it was cheap enough, maybe €12 and for another maybe €10 you'll be collected by bus, ferry to koh samui (if thats your choice of island) and taxi on the far side.

My biggest piece of advice is, check the exchange rate online before you change any money there, they'll rise it in their favour.

You'll have a blast, Im so jealous

why only a week between two countries - Cambodia and Laos and 6 days in Bangkok. Spend a little more time in either country. 2 Days in Bangkok when you arrive and 1 day before you fly home. Bangkok is fun but it's humid and smelly and dirty so spend enough time there to enjoy it but not so much that you get sick of the place. I've never been to Cambodia (yet) but I've been to Laos and I loved it. Not a great place for boozy lads holidays (everywhere closes at 10pm ) but it's a fantastic country.

Head to Kosan Road (sp) and find accomodation there. Don't bother with 5* hotels in sh1tty business districts as you'll be bored out of your mind. There are lots of reasonably good clean hostel type hotels around Kosan for about €15-20 a night.

Yeah Khaosan road would be your best bet for cheap and clean accommodation. I stayed in The D+D inn its was only 8euro a night and the room was a deluxe it was perfect had everything you need really fridge,tv,hairdryer, safe.

+1 on the D and D. Really comfy and cheap. Great to have the rooftop pool too.

Plenty to do in Bangkok to keep you entertained for six days whether you want to party it up or take a more relaxed and culture vulture approach.

The Palace and gardens are breath-taking and it's so cool just wandering around the markets etc. I didn't spend that long in BK and wished I'd had longer. I think most tend to just use it as a pit stop for the Islands or heading up North but it has so much to offer and I really loved the frenetic pace of things. So different from home whereas the rest of Thailand that I visited was so well beaten a tourist track it didn't push my comfort zone much at all which is what I personally like about far flung destinations.

    Still loved it though.

    Have fun!

I honestly dont think you would need 6 days in bangkok really, 2-3 is probably enough. Dont bother with Samui either its just like benidorm with more hawkers trying to sell you stuff. Go to Koh tao or Koh Phangan.
the busiest area of phangan is haad rinn where the full moon party is but some of the beachs on the west coast like haad Yao are great but are pretty quiet. Half moon and Black moon parties are in Ban Tai but i wouldnt stay there for more than a night.

Koh Tao is a great place. Stay somewhere north of the piers.

Or if you want to see another city go to Chiang Mai, its quiter and at a slower pace than bangkok and really friendly people

Ko Samui is a lovely island. OK Chaweng is a hole, but jaysus the outer areas are gorgeous. You just have to move there with your feet and look at it with your eyes. Bo Phut was an excellent spot. And don't forget Ko Tao. Phagnan is a kip imo.
Also I would love 6 days in Bangkok. Just love the place.

Ko Phagnan? I was at the beaches. Haad rin nae or something? Where the full moon parties were. Not my scene.
Though I found a lovely set of apartments there that let me drink and smoke in the swimming pool until 2 in the morning.
    I =iz flashpacker.
Koh Tao though.... Oh what a place.

Yeah thats the problem with phangnan to see its best parts you need to get away from haad rin. Some lovely beaches on the west and north coasts.

Love Koh Tao too, only had 3 days there though. It was full of beautiful canadians and germans when i was there:D

You could say pretty much the same thing about Chaweng not truly representing Samui.
Chaweng is indeed a ****hole, but places like Bophut & Choeng Mon couldn't be more different.

(we classic rockers know what we're talking about!:P )

That pretty much sums up what I love about Bangkok. I enjoyed the likes of Ko Samui, Phangnan and Tao but I'd much rather spend 6 days in Bangkok than on any of those islands.

Bangkok is fantastic!! I'd stay there for 2 weeks alone ...

Try resist the temptation to do an elephant trek, the industy over there is disgusting and cruel. If you want a genuine experience with these animals, do your research and give your money to a reputable elephant sanctuary or refuge (p.s they're not reputable if they offer shows or treks ...!)

Yeah. No other city have I ever been to that has such a vibe as Bangkok does. It feels electrifying just getting lost there.

    Right.
    Im quitting my job.

Yep point taken, i only had 2 days in samui so it didnt matter 2 much. The thing i loved about the other islands was i didnt hear a plane for a week

6 days could be a bit of a struggle, although it's a big city. I'd suggest taking 3 days and head somewhere else. If you're spending the rest of the time on a beach, how about Kanchanaburi which is inland and has lots to do.

Or if it has to be a beach, head down to Koh Chang - it's only 7 hrs from Bangkok, 5 if you hire a private bus from one of the hotels. It's beautiful, particularly Lonely Beach.
