Epic Cycling Holiday

Right, I've been planning an epic cycling trip for years but haven'y had the time or people to do it. Hopefully once I'm finished college I'll have a chance to do it. I'm on here to just ask for some tips or advice.

The main plan is basically to spend circa 2-3months cycling around Europe. With a "basic" route as follows: Dublin-Scotland-Norway-Sweden-Finland-Russia-Estonia-Lativa-Lituania-Poland-Slovakia-Ceckia-austria-hungary-croatia-slovinia-italy-germany-switzerland-france-Dublin! Couple of thousand KM's. Should take a whole summer.

    My questions are as follows:
    - What sort of bike should I do this on? (Racer, tourer, mountain?)
    - Is 80-100km a day too much? (I'm above average fitness, but nothing amazing!)
    - Have you done a trip like this before? - What advice would you give?
    - How much stuff to bring? (I plan on doing a credit card cycling trip, bringing the minimum stuff)
    - Should I camp or do hostels?

Any advice or previous experiences you have would help me. I'm basically in the planning stages.

    Cheers!

I may get a chance tomorrow to fill in with some more but briefly:

    - Light tourer with rack/mudguards
    - 80-100km is a fair bit but certainly doable
    - Not on that scale but I have dawdled along ~1,000km in 3.5 months on the bike for under £700
    - As little as possible- do bring a lightweight tent but don't bother with cooking stuff
    - Camp unless you are made of money

To be honest for this sort of trip I think you will need a tent, if you are planning 2-3 months and just finished college I think you would be hard pushed to finance hostels every night. A tent is great insurance too, if everywhere is full or you aren't going to make it to the next town, etc.

This guy cycled from west coast of America across Europe and Asia to China and then home to Malaysia for aprox $6,500 (= 4,320 Euro) inclusive of planes, visas, equipment and bike !

28,571 km (17,753 miles) over 293 days from May 28, 2007 to March 15, 2008, including a trip around Ireland. He mostly used stealth camping with a Hennessy Hammock and lived off the land where possible.

So practically any journey is possible on a bike !!!
