IT Grad looking for advice

    OK, recent graduate with a 2.1 Computer Science degree and was a strong student over the 4 years. Been looking for jobs the past 2 or 3 weeks and after a slow initial week I've had interviews with one company and they've offered me a job. Having received this offer I'm now being inundated with offers (of course). So the predicament is this;

    The role I have secured is;
    An Interesting project, not your normal Web App DB backend stuff.
    Technically interesting and challenging with the opportunity to really affect the project
    25k.
    Testing with a progression to development.
    Requires a 30minute walk after a bus ride.

    I think I could get more pay (~28-32k), straight into development and a better location but I really like the work this company is doing and the lads I've met so far have all been extremely pleasant. ATM my plan is to work for the year and pursue a masters this time next year so any job I get is likely to only be a years commitment.

    I know it looks bad when I say "I think I could get more pay, straight into development and a better location" but I don't think the pay/position/location of the job offered are horrible and I'd be willing to make some sacrifices in order to enjoy what I'm doing.

    I'm not sure what I'm looking for here, just some opinions/experience on the above. Do you think I should take this role for the year and get some good hands on experience, should I take it but keep looking around, etc... I'm more or less fresh out of the gate so just looking for any advice that's out there. Of course, I might accept the job and hate it at which point I'd look about for something else.

    Hey,

    A mate of mine got 32k, he had a Computer Science Degree with a Masters so maybe the masters pushed it up a bit.

    There seems to be quite a few Grad Jobs on Irish Jobs direct with employers.

    People should not concentrate always on money and it seems like you havn't which is good. If the work is good with great experience and your colleagues are good craic then that is definitely a bonus. The commute might be a bit of a pain, how long would you be on the bus for?

    It's a matter of writing down the advantages on one side of the page and the disadvantages on the other and see what's greater. If all else fails go with your gut!

    It does not "look bad", you worked hard for 4 years to gain the degree and are perfectly entitled to be choosey regarding pay/conditions/location/etc, especially given the current demand for IT graduates.

    I'm not sure about your situation though only you can really answer that, if you don't mind walking 30 minutes in the morning and working for less than €500 a week then by all means accept the job.
