What will be the next milestone in athletics

We have run under 10s for 100m, under 4 min for a mile, even under 8 mins for 2 mile, but what would be regarded as the next superhuman feat, the next milestone for athletes. Now I realise all world records at the moment are spectacular but what would be the next record broken that will be regarded with the same honour as a sub 4 min mile, or sub 10sec 100m

Personally I think a sub 2 hour marathon would be something like this, can this be achieved however I am not sure.

I realise times like that are chosen as they are nice even numbers etc but you get the idea.

Two hour marathon would be impressive alright, will it be the men or women that break it first though?

A 9m long jump or a 100m javelin would be nice to see.

Think a 9m long jump isn't too far away, neither is a 100 javelin, which would win in a race, javelin or human

Maybe winning the olympic showjumping gold without a horse would top it all :) I think the 2hr marathon would be special because if it is ever done there would not be the same hype of someone ever possibly breaking a 159 marathon etc afterwards,(without drugs at least)kind of like eveyone knows who broke the 4 minute mile etc..

I think the 400m races still have some more to go..

Its hard to see how someone can go alot faster than MJ did, I think we are close to the pinnacle in sprints, but we can still go further in distance events,

that wariner guy is a bit scary though..

having said that, I was a huge fan of MJ and wouldn't like to see anyone beat him!!!

100m javelin would have already happened if they didn't keep redesigning them.

I think it did happen, hence the redesign, it was getting a little too close to the track.

I think the sub 2 hour marathon will be the next milestone.

12:30 5000 metres (Definitely within range at the moment)
    25 minute 10.000 Metres

Let's go for a few 'easy' ones - sub 9.70 for the 100m or sub 19.30 for the 200m, sub 43 for the 400. I think these are, perhaps more achievable than the sub 2hr marathon. How about a sub 4 minute mile by a woman???

    sub 1.40 for 800m

sub 16 mins for 4 straight miles (4 sub 4s) has it been done??

sub 2hr marathon, it'll be achieved for sure some day and maybe not that far away

Sub 9.70 is gone and i'd say he could do sub 9.60 which should be the next goal.

nope it hasn't been done and would be something if it was.
Only 1 person Daniel Komen has done 2 sub 4 minute miles in a row when running 7:58 for the 2 miles.

However they are talking about the 12 minute 3 miles.
Have a read of this. When Bekele broke the 5000m WR he ran an average of 60.59 for the 12.5 laps. Wow.

It will take a very special athlete to go sub 1:40 for 800m. I remember the races when Kipketer was best back in the 90's. He did 1:41 and it was amazing. There doesnt seem to be a lot of interest in the 800 these days so the special athletes seem to be doing other distances

An East German threw 104.80m in 1984. Unsurprisingly, they decided to redesign the thing before it became a bloodsport. Jan Zelezny has since thrown 98m, so 100m is not far off.

I don't know if i like the fact they can make it harder or easier at any time, once a record is getting too good they make it harder,

14:00 for 5000m. Defar and Dibaba may chip away at that.

1:50 for 800m. I know that's a huge step but the fact that Jelimo is only 18...

no point having a 2,000m javelin or whatever, may as well put flights on it and make it long range darts!

Same as changing the weights of the shot puts.

True I guess, but hard to compary the world records then,

Anyway on another note, with Bolts running 19:30 , and prob capable of about a 42 sec 400 m . Do you think that a sun 40 400m is possible by any human..? I think thats prob never going to be done

Was reading an article in athletics weekly about Bekele moving to the road one day. Got me thinking would he break Gebreslassie's marathon record or even the 2 hour mark?
Well I put his 5000m world record into the McMillan calculator and it came out with a 2h 03.00 marathon running at 4.42 pace
So not sure if the 2 hour mark will be broke for a long time yet, but 2:03:00 would be something else.

Had Bolt actually ran to the tape and been pushed in the 100 final, I think sub 9.5 was a definite possibility. He started to slow and celebrate with 30 metres to go!

Of all the current records, Flo Jo's 100m is still the most dominant and far reaching!

You are some way right about this. I remember reading a few months ago that humans are performing at close to 99% of their physical limits, without resorting to drugs or some kind of genetically manufactured super-human.

Yeah, someone was actually killed years ago by a stray javelin...
