Well I'm putting myself out there now to be called a philistine about all matters hip-hop! :o

I seem to know very little about J Dilla and his ilk. A lot of posters on here are referencing artists like Slum Village (I know J Dilla was part of them) Madlib, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson etc. I have not heard of these artists until now as I am a bit stuck in the golden age (For me 1987-1997) when it comes to hip-hop.

I picked up MF Doom's 'Mmmm Food' and didn't care for it much. Don't know if this is anything to go by!

On the other hand I love People Under the Stairs, Dilated Peoples, Mos Def etc.

So what's a good starting point here? And what's the best Dilla album as a start point?

    Thanks :)

Shameless plug but i have a free mix here for download of some of his stuff

    http://djstevieg.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2008-02-04T14_54_17-08_00

It was recorded only hours after he died, so it's rushed and far from comprehensive, but it's a good start

I hope to re-do it this year with possibly parts one, two and three

    Albums worth checking include

    The Shining
    Donuts
    Ruff draft
    Fantastic (s)
Beats Rhymes and life and Love Movement (Tribe)
    Labcabinfornia (Sp) Pharcyde
    later Common stuff
    Stakes is High (De la)
and the mighty Champion sound as Jaylib

Many of them are featured on my mix as are classic indie moments like Frank n Dank, Que D etc etc

Common's 'Like Water For Chocolate' and Slum Village's 'Fantastic Vol. 2' are the best places to start re: Dilla.

Donuts is also quite good if you wanna see just how broad he was in terms of his music. I can turn that album and it's just pure bliss.... Something you can just zone out to.

Nobody can chop samples like Jay Dee either.
