Cycling Shoes/ Pedals

Something I've been meaning to do for a long time (money limitations an all that!), but finally got around to doing last month was to buy myself a decent road bike (Trek 1.5, not top of the range by a long shot but I love it!)

The bike came with strap-in pedals (if that's the right name) and I want to change to the proper clip-in ones you use with bike shoes. Don't have much experience in this gear so the question I have is, will any type of bike shoe that has the cleats/clips (again, is that what they're called) fit any kind of pedal? If I bought a pair of DMT shoes would they fit Shimano pedals or do you need Shimano shoes?

I have read the Wiki, and now that there are different sorts of pedals, so I guess I'm talking about SPD pedals, but what I'm asking is does the manufacturer make a difference in terms of compatability.

Also, any recommendations regarding shoes? I pretty much use the bike for a 70/80k ride once a week.

    Thanks

    Lupo
