I have reached full capacity on all my laptop harddrives so now it comes time to buy an external one
would like 1 tb minimum as they fill up so fast it seems like getting a smaller one would just be a waste of time
and id like to store a huge music library on there and also a small compressed movie collection, and also a few series of downloaded tv programs

could anyone recommend a cheap drive that can do all that and stay at a reasonable price?

also is a usb powered drive as powerful/fast as a drive which has its own power cable?

also how important is the performance of the drive when accessing the music or video files?

imm thinking of getting a mybook but not sure, would like some advice.....

You won't get a usb powered 1TB drive. So that rules that out. The speed of the drive only really makes a difference when copying files. The mybook range are pretty good. Just got a 1TB version myself. Can't wait to fill the thing. :)

You are not going to find a USB powered drive above 320gb for a while.

    for disk spring-cleaning i reccomend free-app windirstat.

I did the same thing for a while - downloading movies and TV but youve got to rationalise between a) how often theyre going to be watched b) how long would it take you to get the files online again. I mean Ill keep most movies but TV is space-hungry, so unless im going to rewatch it alot Ill usually scrap it all once Ive watched a full season.

Cheapest Drives come in Bulk. Cost for memory breaks down into capacity, mobility, and speed. So a MyBook, which requires AC power, has loads of space, and is probably mediocre in RPMs (probably 5400 im guessing) will actually be the most economical choice, and will be the most affordable per megabyte. The only thing cheaper would be an Internal 3.5" drive. Not an option for a laptop.

Get the mybook, and when you want to watch something, you can watch it right of the book or transfer it to your hard drive. a USB drive doesnt make sense for mass media storage.
