Blocked at Work

I was nearly one year into a job, where most days, I'd eat my lunch, while browsing boards, when all of a sudden, yesterday, when browsing the site, I clicked on a post to be greeted with a big scary black and red message

"THIS SITE HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY THE ADMINISTRATORS"

    I clicked refresh, same message.
Typed "www.boards.ie" into the address bar, same message.

We've already lost Myspace, Bebo, Facebook, Hotmail and Youtube. Boards was the one remaining site, I could be entertained, while eating my Tesco microwave curry, and now it's gone. It's like losing a friend.

Am I the only one this has happened to, or is boards.ie blacklisted on a lot of companies out there? And what else am I supposed to do while eating my lunch? Talk to other people? Enjoy my food with out distractions? Read a book? I'm lost.

Can you not use a proxy site? Surprisingly we still have every site access at work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 682 ✭✭✭Bros123

All I look at at work is RTE and BBC news. They are so strict it's unreal and if you are found to have been on a "suspect" site word would spread round that you have been downloading porn!Suspect site could be anything that's not Google or a news site!!
Never tried Boards, webmarshall might ride in on his horse and arrest me!!!

I'll have to give this a go tomorrow.
Is it safe to log in while using one?

I wouldn't use a proxy at work. It most likely breaches their user policy which in a lot of places could land you in a trouble.

I dont understand how it has been done but the only site blocked in my workplace is Hotmail.

You can look up maddie does osama and no problems*

It even stopped me from looking it up on my own lappie

Is this normal or freaky that they can block a site on an open wireless network?

*obviously this may come some consternation as it goes against my bail conditions

Different companies block different sites for different reasons. It's sometimes to get workers to actually work, sometimes it's for security, sometimes it's just to relieve stress on the network. Companies don't want every other person streaming video and slowing down the connection for those who are actually working, nor do they want time wasted by the watching of videos/playing of online games. There tends to be some reason behind it.
For example those working in Financial institutions (and associated with them - ie tech support who can remote in) tend not to have access to private e-mails, to avoid sending of secrets. Not only fair, but completly understandable.

If you're friends with the Network Admin/IT you could always ask as to why it's blocked. Depending on where/how it is blocked different rules can be set (and possibly adjusted depending on your reasons/friendship/ability to swindle! For example, I know some places allow youtube only outside work hours, and hence have it blocked during working hours to improve productivity. Other places have rules according to different individuals/their rank/their job etc.

As for me? Two of my (work) machines are fairly restricted (and ALL my web usage/IM's on one of those is logged), whereas on my other two I can do pretty much whatever I want within reason without being blocked (that is, when i'm not busy!). Not that I would. I can and have checked odds on a betting site (a commonly blocked type of site) but haven't tested (nor will I be) checking for porn/piracy etc. NO interest in loosing my job over something as stupid as that!

They block some stuff where i work, throw you a warning and prompt you
to proceed with a nice big 'Ye fk it, go on' button.

They do keep tabs on everything though and can even un-'permanently-delete' your emails which is a bit scary.

Boards is (kind of) blocked by my current employer but theres a nice friendly "Grant Temporary Access" button underneath the warning message.

Threatening enough to put you off spending all day logged in (10 mins inactivity and I'm automatically logged out) and lax enough to allow for lunchtime rants in Motors.

    Try putting in asdfgdfsgdh.boards.ie

www.boards.ie and boards.ie are both blocked for me but putting a different subdomain always works.

Try using the boards.ie ip address 89.234.66.107
i have youtube.com blocked in work but i can still access via the ip address.

Been blocked for several years where I work, as are just about any discussion board sites. Any sort of webmail and youtube are also blocked, and I believe eBay is next on the hitlist. At this rate I'll only be able to use the internet for legitimate work purposes. :(

You can try http://boards.sparky-s.ie It may work for you, but with boards cookie setup, your login wont hold.
Ive used it for when some offices block it. :D

You can browse however. Thats until they catch that :)

Being in Oz, I have access to all UK and Ireland sites thank God. I'd be lost without boards (6,500posts since I started here in Jan :o).

Facebook is massive over here so that's blocked but bebo, which I use more, isn't cause very few people are into it.

As to the why? Have ye not thought about the obvious and likely reason, I don't care what anyone says, for a site being blocked? A fvckwit loner IT department on a fvcking hitler-style ego trip.

As to what now? It's summer. Go for a walk in the sunsh...
...oh sorry. forgot. You're in Ireland...

I've worked a job where only the RTE site was accessible:(

I've worked a job where there was absolutely nothing blocked and msn messenger was used by the employees in different departments to contact each other as it was a large building. Most of the day my team would just be having a group convo on msn slagging off the the complete bitch of a team leader.

It was also rumored that a guy was watching porn during his shift, he'd then go to the toilet and come out looking rather flustered........

In my current job there is unlimited web access and it is all logged, i have only started using it consistently in the last week or so because i'm leaving next month and there's so little staff they can't fire me:D

    +1

    OP,

What I do is use Logmein
Leave the client running on your home PC..
Log in to it through work..
    And Roberts your fathers brother..

Browse away without fear of tracking.
And you can even keep an eye on any downloading that you have set up for when you're at work..

    And its FREE..

Are there any managers on boards.ie, that access the site during working hours and if so, do they regard their employees access to such sites harmless (so long as the job gets done?)

Leave a Full crate of Beer and/or Wodka/Whiskey outside your Local BOFH's office everyday for the next week, then the sites "maybe" magically unblocked....

For all the people using IP address to "by-pass" crap filtering software, your activities are still been logged {with both the IP address and corresponding DNS entry} and "may" count as a breach of the AUP.

Nothing really blocked in my work. All the webmails, social networking sites, youtube, boards can all be accessed...

funny thing though, i just tried that logmein.com link that someone posted above, and it came up saying it was blocked. First time i've seen that in my company.

Has anybody everasked for something to be unblocked? Like so they can use it for lunch?
I've had putty and pokertube bloked on me, on the day I was leaving work, mauahahah.

I honestly don't know what I would do if Boards was blocked at work!

I can get to all mail accounts, but Facebook, Myspace, etc. are blocked, as well as "any message or discussion board" and blogs.
I work in the US, and I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but Boards apparently doesn't count as any of that.

Boards, ftw, is pretty much the only thing i CAN look at while working.

I have the esteemed pleasure of working in the I.T. Dept so its almost full access for muah. I dont abuse it however, partly due to the oul 'with great power, comes great responsibility' jobbie and mostly as Im flat out fixing udder peoples problems.

One company I worked in had 'Quota Time', where-by you had 60minutes to surf The NET between 12pm and 2:30 which I thought was the farest way to approach the sticky issue.

Same here - I'm also the one who blocks stuff! I get a request to block something so I block it - don't go looking to block stuff unless somebody is trying to bypass the proxy or something then I step in and do some trickery.;)

There's a load of stuff blocked in my place as well. MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Flickr, Ebay, blogs, YouTube, links from GoogleAds, some discussion boards. Now they're clamping down on usb keys

I've a friend who works in a place where they give them print-outs of the websites they visited and how long they were on them.

be thankful its only your work place thats blocking the sites..

think of everyone in china who are being refused to search china's history..

you will find no mention of Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and various other incidents

three of us working in my workplace - the boss, the manager, and myself... The boss has a log for his own reasons, but my web history is also there. the Manager is usually looking over my shoulder because a lot of his work is to be done on the same computer(&socialising), but he's on other discussion boards too, so he's sound about it.

Worst thing is, that the desk faces the window, so people walking past on the street can look in and see you watching porn... and **** too, but I haven't tried that yet.
