Yes, been to hospital before anyone says it :) 2 broken ribs today, fun times! Just wondering if anyone here has any advice on what to do....apart from not move! :( Anything that might help, should I lie down as much as possible etc. Thanks.

Just got to tough it out, I'm afraid. If it's a bad break, sometimes a compression bandage can help for the first few days. Don't try anything that will have you breathing heavily for a few weeks but there's no reason to lie down as much as possible - that's just lazy ;). Take any pain meds as recommended by your physician.

EDIT: Also, professional sports massage worked wonders for me personally after the initial few weeks of pain/tenderness. I wouldn't try it until it's settled down a good bit, but it can be great in getting over the annoying, lingering discomfort you can be left with long after the bone has healed.

Poor you. My daughter broke ribs twice and once the painkillers kicked in she was a lot more comfortable. I think it's best not to lie around, just take it easy but move a little even just a wander through the house or garden will do it.

Had it twice- nothing you can do breathing 20 times a minute is what slows down the healing- just know what causes pain when your not on pain relief and avoid doing what causes it!

Thanks very much everyone. Yeah have broken a few bones before but for some reason this time I'm just more uneasy....I think at least when I've broken my leg and hand I had a cast so felt like it was being fixed but with my ribs there's nothing I can do so I'm a bit out of sorts. Just have to tough it out I guess. Thanks for your replies.

    i know the pain!

I extend my sympathies - my ribs were just cracked, not completely broken and it hurts soooooo much.

Painkillers and time is whats needed - but it can take a few weeks to fully settle!

Thanks DrIndy....it hurts a lot alright but I'm finding my comfort spots now where I'm more at ease so at least it's a not constant pain so can't complain too much, I just hope they don't take too long to heal but I'm trying to be as careful as possible. As my Dad said, "It could be worse sure, it could have been me instead" Nice :D
