Is there anyway on the internet you can learn how to use dreamweaver? Does anyone here use it? Or does anyone know about a website were you can build your own site?

If you go to my website, there's a link on the bottom to a hosting company. They provide a site builder & templates as part of their very reasonable hosting package.

For the record, I used Microsoft Expression Web 2 to build my site.

I'm using Wordpress hosted on my own domain with some reasonably straightforward plugins and themes. Now that I've got used to setting it up, I can do a site in about an hour.

You can see there result here.

Heres a video I used to help me with the dreamweaver side of things.. 3parts

    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=3HnFlm9pV48

Its not really that hard just watch some videos and get your hands dirty trying stuff in dreamweaver.

Make sure you resize your pictures properly, you dont want to end up like me with a site thats takes ages to load :D You will learn from your mistakes!

If you have photoshop you should use it to make your design! You can get really original then! For the photoshop side just make up your own design and slice it up. The link to the video really explains it better than my ramblings :p

heres my 1st website made with dreamweaver and photoshop

    www.darrencarlinphoto.com

new design in photoshop im doing atm... minus the orange box

I originally found Dreamweaver quite easy to use but the big problem I had with it was uploading it. We used siteground who also have a sitebuilder. Hubbie used the sitebuilder for a band page and it was easy. I'm quite fussy though and that is why I used Dreamweaver, you can do it exactly as you like.

When you get to the uploading bit though you really need to use the tutorial and the main problem I had with it was the name given to the home page, i think you have to call it index.html or something like that.

Personally I would be more into getting it done for me next time though as it was a LOT of work but I guess my site was quite detailed.

With any website, the main page is always index.html or default.html. That's more a web configuration standard than anything specific to siteground.

I use siteground too, and find them brilliant, with so many tools and add-ons.

The uploading and such should be very simple in dreamweaver, once you configure your site options.

If you have the time and the brain cells then learning a bit of CSS is yer only man. w3schools.org have some brilliant stuff (on html as well). CSS is what most people are using for layout and styles these days as its accessible and web-standard and you can change your whole site with a few clicks. Not as immediately easy as the WYSIWYG editors though.

If however you're TOTALLY new to this and just want to get something up I'd recommend starting in Dreamweaver with tables. You can centre a fixed-width table (go for 780px wide..) and control your content as easily as you would making a Word document within it. Just go to insert>table.. Be warned though that its really not the done thing anymore.

Gis a shout if you're stuck..

Yea I agree CSS is the way to go, its something that I would have rather started with if you can go for it. Its more complicated but its alot better in the long run.

Im reading through stuff on w3schools.org and using youtube.. theres alot of good stuff on youtube!

The full screen one looks really nice, I might use it for my galleries if I cant make a nice one myself. For those interested heres a video explaining basic html & css! I just watched and its pretty good, its 40 minutes long but its detailed.

I made a load of my own websites using dreamweaver - Then realised I'm not a website designer and went out and bought one :)

I'll probably get slaughtered for this, but there's no reason not to go out and spend a few bob on hiring someone (Even a student) or buying a good template - It's so easy to make a bad website, but not even know it because it's not your field!

That applies to almost anything Faj, but therein lies the challenge, quite often the "freshness" brought to a project by someone outside the field avoids all the hackneyed boll*cks that you get from within the field. I find this a lot in my profession (video editor/film maker).

    This +1

(I am totally not just saying this because I am a professional web developer and want you to give me all your money)

Oh, big time, I agree - I could go on for ages about this (I see it the whole time too) but having the ground rules means that you can re-enforce your design - You might be breaking every rule in the book, but you're doing it for the right reasons :p

This is my new site http://www.jmcdermott.ie

It's hand coded with a small bit of Dreamweaver to speed up the structuring process and includes two Wordpress installations.
If you are looking for something fast, free and editable I recommend Wordpress. Extremely easy to get the hang of it.

    This is the part of my website I'm using for my photo's;

    http://www.jmcdermott.ie/gallery/

That page is a Wordpress installation and a edited theme.

    Installation 5 Mins
    Editing 30 Mins

/Off Topic Taken is a great film :D

/On Topic Wordpress is primarily a blogging platform but can be used for loads of things. You dont need to know coding, although it helps if you want to edit the files. Very straightforward though. There are loads and loads of free themes out there too. Free Wordpress themes.

You should give it a practice run to see how it turns out. Whether you prefer it over your site or vice versa. Any hassle give me a shout.

I don't mean to sound like a complete pr!ck here, but there's no reason for you to have a scrollbar on the main page. There's craploads of blank space there causing the scrollbar - and it'll make it look nicer imho. Also why's the site so... tunnel down the centre of the page? You've plenty of room.. unless you designed it using an EEE ;) Just looks rather cramped imo.

Nah it's okay, I enjoy constructive criticism, however you could have posted it in this thread or PM'd me opposed to posting a website review in someone else's thread :) Review duly noted.
