Has playing an instrument influenced your taste in music ?

    Well, has it ?

For example, I've never liked listening to the smiths, but I find their songs very enjoyable to play on guitar.
Equally I find quite a lot of my favourite songs kinda boring to play, so I guess it's helped me to expand my range of musical taste.

Anyone else ? Has playing an instrument unlocked any bands or even genres of music that you'd disliked previously ?

    Most definitely.

Playing bass has led me to discover other genres that I would not normally listen to. Such as Dub, Blues and also Jazz.

I've been playing so long I can't really remember what it was like beforehand. My earliest memory is listening to my oul one's Mothers Of Invention records when I was three, so it's always been a case of anything goes, musically. I've always got time for any kind of tune with a good bassline, but I was into bass riffs on songs before I ever thought of playing, so in conclusion... what was the question?

No. I cant say that playing an instrument has influenced or broadened my taste in music. It has certainly enhanced my enjoyment of it because knowing a little basic theory and playing an instrument has let me see (or hear ) it in another way. I now have an idea as to how it's constructed.

    Interesting topic BTW. :)

Yes it defo has! Its also changed the way in which i listen to music! I love listening to the structure and how its put together. Some ppl give out and tell me to just enjoy the music but I do enjoy it, thats my way of enjoying it! :)

Definitely, the guitar was my gateway into metal. I could really appreciate and like what a guitarist was doing and eventually I got to like the vocals. Also I really like some instrumental albums and there would be no way I'd be able to listen to it (if I had even heard of it) without my guitarist ears on.

Playing bass & guitar has helped me understand and get into the more complicated stuff. I also listen out for all the more subtle touches in songs which would have passed unnoticed before.

While not necessarily altering my taste in music I have noticed the instruments I play more as time went on. These days I've noticed that I'm paying a lot of attention to keyed instruments, it must be a sign that I should take up the piano :)

Yes, i am fine tuned into what's actually happening in the music and somtimes try copy a drum beat or guitar/bass line ,mostly in vein .

Think i would liked to have being a session musician playing some of those extrordinary rifts and stuff, on so many great recordings over the years .

It's hard to say really. I started guitar when I was 10 and it's safe to say my tastes have developed since then. Though I don't know whether they'd be any different to they are now if I never started playing. It has enhanched my enjoyment of music certainly so I suppose if I didn't play guitar I'd probably only be into mainstream music.
