    Hey there,

I was given a laptop to fix by my cousin, and to my horror its a blue screen issue.

Now there are files on the hard drive that need to be got off it other than that a wipe and re install is no problem.

    The error is a

    Stop: 0x0000006B (0xC0000102,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x00000000)

now ive done a bit of looking up on it and it seems that it might be a faulty HD issue, hopefully not.

It wont boot to xp obviously, and it wont go into Safe mode either so stuck right at that message.

What I thought of doing was removing the HDD from the laptop and connecting it to my pc via IDE, only to find out that the IDE connection on the back of the HDD (2.5 inch are laptop hard drives yea?) is a smaller connection than your normal IDE cable.

So how would I go about connection the laptop HDD to a computer to try and get the data out of it, are there smaller IDE cables for those hard drives? Or is there an external case I can pop it into?

(I'm actually looking for an external casing for another small laptop hard drive so if some one could link me to one of those it would be great thanks.)

So if I can get the files of the hard drive then all I have to do hopefully is format it an re install windows hopefully. Yea ? :)?

Its possible to get a cable with the smaller laptop connection on one end and the standard on the other end. I dont know where to get one though :(

Just letting you know they do exist.

This 3.5" to 2.5" HDD Converter will do it for you, and for $1.62. DealExtreme are great, and shipping is free. Can't beat that.

The easier option is not to take the drive out at all. Download a bootable linux (like Knoppix - runs off the CD, no install necessary). It will give you access to all his files (provided he hasn't selected to encrypt them), and copy them off to an external hard drive. Pop the windows CD in the laptop, reinstall windows, then copy the files back from the HDD

Could also try Bart PE if you prefer a windows bootable cd.

Peats have a SATA enclosure for 20 quid. They'yre handy to have, I now use my old laptop hd as a portable.

Blue screen more times than not is a failing HD, backup immediately. I found out the hard way last year 2 days before a college project was due which was sitting on my dying HD
