THE lands of a Mallow solicitor will be location for an international pony club event to be held in North Cork for the first time ever.

History will be recorded for Duhallow Pony Club when four young Mallow people will compete in their home town against sporting stars from around the world this month.

Both the national and international pony club tetrathlon will take place in Mallow with the cross country riding and running phase on the land of solicititor David O’Meara of Clyda, Mallow.

Duhallow Pony Club members Sarah Gayer, Miriam Cashman, John O’Donoghue and Ricky Healy will compete from August 22 to 24. In addition, Miriam Cashman and Sarah Gayer both travelled to England this week to compete in the British regional, national and international section of the competition there, that will continue until August 17.

John O’Donoghue and Ricky Healy will join Sarah and Miriam for the Irish part of the competition in Mallow.

Chairperson at Duhallow Pony Club Mary Healy, mother of competitor Ricky Healy, expressed a deep sense of pride in the team and the upcoming event.

“All of the four help each other out. I am thrilled that my 18 year old son has given such a committment. It is fantastic,” said Mrs Healy.

The pony event for young people up to 21 years of age will comprise of cross country running, swimming, target shooting with an air rifle/pistol and cross country riding.

The international competitors will be matched with a suitable horse at Kilulkey House near Cecilstown. The international target shooting follows in the afternoon at St Mary’s Secondary School gym with the international teams target shooting.

Both national and international competitors will swim on Saturday in the local pool. The occasion will finish off with a banquet and prize giving in Liscarroll. Meanwhile, more history will be recorded for Duhallow Pony Club this Saturday when five children from Mallow and surrounding areas will take place in pony games at the RDS.

The teenagers taking part will be Katie Healy, Daniel O’Meara, Caroline O’Connell, Kate O’Donovan and Emma Burke. Mary Healy, also mother of Katie Healy, said “it is brilliant —we are proud parents at the moment.

“It is great to see people enjoy and achieve, they are very determined children,” she added.

As well as four senior international competitors, Duhallow Pony Club will have a girls and boys team at both junior and senior level taking part in the national championships in Clyda. It is the first time in several years that Clyda has had club teams taking part in all four categories.
