XUbuntu browsers

I've recently made the move from windows to xUbuntu. By and large, I'm very impressed. I've realised that my old P4 machine wasn't completely rubbish after all.

As expected, pretty much everything works a million times faster than in windows with the exception of probably the most important part - browsing the web.

I find firefox to be quite slugish at times, I installed the lighter epiphany browser, which was only marginally (if at all) faster. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

I'm not even entirely sure if the issue is down to the browser or my rubbish Vodafone 3G connection. Can't wait to get rid of it when the contract is up! I'm quite sure that surfing was less painful with IE though.

    Links. Just kidding...

You could try Opera or Flock.

In regards to Firefox, there are some things you can try to speed it up too ( http://www.ubuntugeek.com/speed-up-firefox-web-browser.html )

I find Opera to be the next best browser to Firefox on Linux. Konqueror seems to be falling behind these days, hopefully they'll move to using WebKit at some stage in the future.

    I miss Galeon :(

    Bookmarked. Thanks for that.

funny you mention this OP , i have the same issue with both Opera and FF3
on Ubuntu, I have it running on a laptop and a desktop installed only last week and both browsers feel quite sluggish on both machines. In my case both are using wireless connections.

Your post just remined me to do some digging on the problem.

You could try using Open DNS nameservers, rather than the DNS addresses provided by your ISP

    https://www.opendns.com/start?device=ubuntu

Give it a try, you can always change it back again.

    Also, try the Swiftweasel browser:
    sudo apt-get install swiftweasel

I think there's an Iceweasel as well.

See if it does any good. The tweaks (mentioned by others) always help, especially the ipv6 one.

Have you tried a wired ethernet connection? Any difference?

If all browsers and both wired and wireless are slow, then the problem is probably IPv6, disable it.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
