New Dell won't boot

My Dad purchased a new dell Inspiron 530s from Pc world the other day.

It was working fine but now when he tries to turn it on it will attempt to boot for half a second, the light will turn on and the fan will start but it will then stop. It will then attempt to boot up itself again but the same thing happens. This will go on seemingly indefinitely.

Holding in the power button does not work either.

Is this a known problem or does anyone know of any solution?

It could be faulty RAM or any of a multitude of things . I'd be more inclined to bring it back to the shop though , given it's a new machine .

I think I had this problem with a new Dell, might be this problem or one of a thousand others.

Did the computer always shut down correctly or would you have to force a shut down?

It could be registry files damaged and need to be repaired by scanning the disks

Can you get into the Bios settings?

It would have to get past the bios in order for windows registry to effect the machine.

Yes, when it got past the Bios and booted windows that when the problems started. I had to use the command promt to fix it.

It gets nowhere. Very brief start up, fans whirr for half a second and then it dies and tries again after about 5 seconds. It isn't even on long enough for anything to show on screen.
Very strange, maybe a dodgy PSU.
Anyway Dell are going to have a look at it as it's brand new.

Yeah get onto Dell Tech Support.

For something like this it sounds like the motherboard is shorting or maybe PSU problem. If its RAM you will hear beeps, most other things will not cause the system to cut out straight away. If CPU is a problem the machine will not power on and you will see an amber light.

I would be betting on Motherboard Shorting, nothing you can do about it really....contact Dell, there is very little trouble shooting they can ask you to do for this.

Return to PC World and get a replacement before you get out of warrenty for a direct replacement.

Ditto. Just bring it back, if it was bought the other day then they should give you a replacement.

I have a inspiron 6000 with pretty much the same problem. It was working fine up to a week ago but then I turned it on and I can hear the HD boot up and then it tries the CD rom but nothing else after this - no beeping nothing on screen - the dell screen doesn't even show up to offer me the option to change the Bios settings. Unfortunately mine is out of warranty. I am thinking that it could be the mother board, any one come across this??

Yep, bring it back. Get a HP or something.

I'm surprised people are buying from D€ll these days.
