I've seen these a couple of times on Grand Designs. They look like a fixture coming out of your worktop or some can be fitted to your sink. I've done some googling but I get mixed results and I haven't found the one specfic ones I have seen on the TV (the ones integrated in to the work top). They seem to be a great way to get rid of the kettle and save money on energy in the ling run.

Anyone know what I'm on about, have one?

Not sure that it is the one I'm interested in is tankless so doesnt keep watter hot in a tank it heats it on demand as its being run through the tap.

You know your electricity bill will go up right? Not down. Keeping water hot 24/7 can not be too cheap.
all to save you the 30 seconds it takes to boil a modern kettle?

    Something like these?

There are both pressurized flow ones (just like an electric shower in effect) and ones with a small (5ltr) tank.

ah just realised you are not looking for one that stores water, but heats it as you pump it. good idea.

Not all of these things have a built-in water tank, some do have a small 5 or 10 litre (very well insulated) tank, just as many gas powered combi-boilers do, but others work purely on-demand just like an electric shower does.

Also, they're not really meant as a replacement for a kettle, more for kitchen sinks where you might want instant hot (not boiling) water, but have an unusually long pipe run to the existing CH boiler. Water temperatures won't go anywhere near boiling point.

You know whats funny? As advanced as America is, they do not have kettles (electric) over there :D If they boil water they use a stove kettle like a whistle kettle on their cooker.

You have to search in specialist stores for an electric kettle and most Americans do not know such a thing exists until they come here.

However devices like what REW is talking about have started to pop up. My inlaws house has a water cooler with a hot water tap that delivers hot water on demand. As Alun said, its no where near boiling point.

Yes, they were quite common in the Netherlands when I lived there for some reason.

It's true what you say about America as well, the technology in most home appliances I saw over there is reminiscent of what would have been the latest thing in the UK or Ireland in the 60's (also in terms of styling!) which is odd for what is ostensibly such a technologically advanced country.

Hmm ... sounds a little too prone to accidents if you ask me. Do you have kids, or even ones who visit occasionally?

Might be to do with the fact they only use 110 volts as opposed to our 230

No and yes. It is somthing I'm considering which is why I want to reseach it. I would imagine they have a child lock on the tap itsself. Even an adult who doesn't realise and just thinks its a hot tap might get a very bad burn.

I can just imagine some adult goes to the tap, tries taking off the childlock only to lose control and when he gets it off the hot water comes rushing out scalding him.

Don't think they gush so much as trickle gently for that very reason.
