How hot should a CAM get?

I was using the Conax MP4 CAM last night for a few hours- and noticed it got shockingly hot (as in far too hot to even contemplate touching/holding). The CAM is the 'Conax MPEG4 NP4 Neotion Processor HDTV', model CAM-CXMPG4- from the dvbshop. Is this normal?

Also- I've noticed an issue using the CAM in a Sony S-Series set- if I exit the Digital mode (e.g. to watch satellite or a DVD or something) I have to reboot the TV to get the CAM working again. Is this normal?

    Cheers,

    Shane

    thanks man, appreciated.
Can i ask you how do you find it? Picture ok? No break ups or blocking? Does it support EPG?
Sorry if questions are stupid.. not sure what to expect. :)

It runs incredibly hot (though as per above, apparently thats normal).
Picture quality is a hell of a lot better than the digital pictures from the DCMNR trials which ended recently- colours a lot deeper and images a lot more vibrant. I'd compare it to running a 9800 with the physics engine tweaked, versus an old 8400.
Breakups or blocking will of course be dependent on signal strength. I did notice severe blockiness on TG4 this evening (but not on other channels). Its not caused by the card though.
EPG is a function of the set itself (its not the CAM thats controlling it). The Sony software doesn't seem the best to be honest- switching between inputs at all, or even changing the channel, can knock the CAM off, necessitating turning off the set and on again, to clear it. Not ideal.......

    Hope this helps,

    Shane

Thanks very much for a detailed explanation! I think i'll get one. It sure beats waiting for the DTT receiver boxes to arrive on market...

Can I ask you why you got the Conax one ?

Viaccess is the encryption system that Boxer will be using.....most likely and there is a Viaaccess version!

BTW, RTE 1, 2 TG4 and TV3 were broadcast in MPEG2 during the DTT Trial, so it should be better!

It was the only one I could get that was in stock at the time, and I have zero intention of subscribing to any of the packages, I will only ever want to pull into RTENLs mux (thankyou Freesat......)

However I advise against anyone buying a CAM till Boxer is available and you see what deals they have.
