I have an old 3rd Gen ipod sitting around. I recently bought a new radio for my car and was wondering is there anyway I can format the ipod to make it just a HDD so i can use it with the USB connection on my radio. As in take off all the firmware and all that c**p.

Ive tried formatting it with windows and placing the music onto it in folders but the firmware keeps reinstalling the ipod controller interface :(

Anyone know how to do this?

Yeah Thanks man, I was aware of that in itunes but it doesnt work.

I thought it was my radio that was acting up but i tried sticking a music folder onto my usb stick and that worked fine.

On the ipod through my computer I placed a folder with a couple of tracks aswell to test it. But the ipod control folder keeps reappearing even after i do a full format of the drive.

Basically I just want to wipe any apple software from the drive and have it as a stand alone harddrive nothing else...

Still not entirely what im looking for.

When I go into Disk Management I can see the master boot record for the drive as a seperate partition. I want to delete that and merge the two partitions together but it wont let me. Just remembered partition magic. Ill give that a shot

OK so now ive tried a couple of different partition manager softwares. None of them allow me to modify the partition on the Ipod HDD. Its like its locked down or something. :(

I get what your saying but does the partion not only take up a small ammount, is it even worth getting rid of just for a few songs/files? Plus if you get rid of the Ipod system folders it can no longer work as an ipod.

I tried it there again. Formatted the HDD, enabled disk use in itunes and then placed one folder of music on the ipod through my computer. Still no joy.

Im sure re-writing the firmware back on sorts out any changes made to the partitions and what not.

Writing the firmware back on, Im not sure if its that simple, I wouldn't risk it unless I had a really old ipod.
