    Hey guys

I just got a new DSLR, and I wish to start taking some nice photos with it. I am based in the South Dublin area. Is there any nice places in and around Dublin that I might venture to for taking nice photos?

I've already been to some nice places like Glendalough, Killiney Bay, Sandymount.

    Thanks for your suggestions

    Johann

Dun Laoghaire is a good place on a sunny evening.

+1 for Dun Laoghaire, the east pier was undergoing a major refurb last visit around June and the old bandstand and viewing shelter were temporarily removed, but still got some good (by my standards) shots in, there's plenty of quirky subject matter.

Also Powersourt gardens up from Eniskerry village are excellent.

Apart from the usual Glendalough, Enniskerry and Powerscourt I think the Sally Gap is a good spot. But for real class you should really come Northside:):P. Botanic Gardens, The deer in the park, Howth and all along the East coast is nice just now. Either way I hope enjoy your new Camera

+1 for Howth and Phoenix park.

Dropped the girlfriend out to UCD today and reckon you could get some interesting shots there on a Sunday. It was empty and the place is huge so you can snap away til your hearts content without hassle. Swans in the pool, Football up at the pitches and some great empty spaces. Say you'd get some interesting night shots there, too.

    Hi all

    thanks for the suggestions.

am just back from Dun Laoghaire today, festival of world cultures. Too much people for my tasting, however, took some nice snaps of the harbour

I'm jealous Johann! I got down friday, 10 bearable shots out of 120, like an idiot using autofocus too much so the fairground ride supports were sharp but the faces on scared punters were in bokeh (out of focus smiley)
Then Edgar Mullers 3d icescape on the east pier was far from ready.

Tried again yesterday this time with the tripod, but aborted due to crazy traffic, snowballs chance of parking. Could have gone to Blackrock and got the dart in, but by then I was then in no mood to lug it all, and if it's that crowded the tripod is risky.

The other issue I find in general, is that I only feel comfortable having strangers in shots if they are distant/crowds/consenting adults. If I'd a penny for every "kodak moment" I'd love to have captured but couldn't, I'd be a rich man.

The swans in Blackrock park are another convenient possibility Johann, bring bread and you'll get plenty of close-ups. Also the old bandstand there that was used in the Thin Lizzy video (old town?) is interesting, with a tripod/remote and exposure bracketing the hdr results can be good, I got a fine wide angle one with groovy clouds also reflected in puddles.

Dun Laoghaire - Peoples Park has some potential.

Dublin - Garden of Remembrance, Prospect Cemetery (Glasnevin), Botanic Gardens, anywhere in Dublin at 7am on a Saturday or Sunday is great (as long as it's not raining ).

Howth is absolutely fantastic if the sun is shining. Go up to the Hurdy Gurdy museum on Abbey Street and walk to the railings - you have the whole of Howth below you.

I got hundreds of shots in and around Dublin in June this year (they're submitted for publishing in a guide book so can't post any until I find out which ones they'll use).

It also depends what your preferred subject is (water, gardens, nature, churches, commerce, etc). You'll find it all here.

Head off the beaten track in Sandymount, and up towards Poolbeg, is always a great spot :)

I would recommend the Grand Canal, which is on the south side. Anywhere west of Ranelagh Bridge makes good photos.
